Position Summary

Assist Dracut’s disabled and Older Adult population in maintaining their independence by providing transportation services as a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) bus driver as well as general Senior Center functions under the supervision of the Human Services Director.

Supervision

Works under the direct supervision of the Human Services Director following established rules, regulations, and policies to complete assigned tasks according to a prescribed time schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions or duties listed below are illustrations of the type of work performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Operate CDL and/or non-CDL vehicles in order to provide rides to seniors and residents with disabilities and occasionally to transport Senior Center related supplies
  • Rides provided include but is not limited to medical appointments, shopping, errands, day trips, and to/from the Senior Center
  • Attend all required driver trainings (typically renewed every 2 years)
  • Attend all required Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Training
  • Perform daily vehicle checks both pre-trip and post-trip
  • Report concerns/issues with vehicles to Operations Coordinator
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness including but not limited to vacuuming/sweeping, emptying trash, wipe/disinfect dash/seats/other surfaces, washing the exterior, clearing the roof of snow in winter.
  • Operate a mobile phone safely, pulling over as needed
  • Provide physical assistance for clients entering/exiting the vehicle when needed
  • Assist with carrying of bags, parcels, walkers, canes, etc.
  • Operate wheelchair lift /ramp as needed, securing wheelchair/scooter in accordance to training/regulations
  • Observe clients to ensure they have entered their destination, especially in the winter
  • Maintain contact with clients to inform them of pick-up times and schedule changes
  • Observe changes in client habits, listen to client’s concerns, report anything concerning to the Operations Coordinator and the Social Service Coordinator
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education & Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger endorsement welcome, but not required
  • Good Driving Record
  • Knowledge of the Town of Dracut’s streets, roads and routes to neighboring cities and towns
  • Experience working with senior citizens and must have sensitivity to elderly issues and concerns
Knowledge, Ability & Skill
  • Ability to juggle tight schedules and the requests/needs of clients while maintaining an excellent level of customer service
  • Possess a pleasant and outgoing personality
  • Ability to be patient and flexible
  • Exhibit high public relation skills and be sensitive to the unique need of seniors
  • Be self-motivated and able to work independently

The employee works in a very physical environment. Bus Drivers are required to exit the vehicle frequently and enter the vehicle from the driver’s side, passenger stairs, on the wheel chair lift, or hop in through the back door. Requirements include ability to sit, talk, listen, stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, lift up to 40 pounds, and push/pull/maneuver a client occupied wheel chair weighing 250+ pounds.

The position has RMV vision requirements. Equipment operated includes office machines, telephone, vehicles in varying sizes, wheel chair lifts, and wheel chair securement equipment.

The Lowell Regional Transit Authority (LRTA) requires random alcohol/drug screening of all those operating vehicles in partnership with the LRTA.

The Town of Dracut requires a CORI, physical exam and drug screen post offer.
