Position Overview

We are looking to recruit an Advanced Skills Learning & Literacy Coordinator and Academic Tutor with a specialist background in literacy, library sciences, and digital learning to join our team. Based in the secondary building, this role is dedicated to students aged 15–18 (Years 10–13).

You will work closely with the Head of English and the Head of Library to bridge the gap between school‑level study and university independence. This is not a traditional teaching role; it is a specialist support position focused on developing the super‑curriculum—academic research, digital literacy, AI competency, and advanced study skills.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities Pre‑University Academic Literacy & Research Support
  • Lead the development of a dedicated area for research within The Cloisters, fostering an environment of academic inquiry.
  • Deliver one‑on‑one and small‑group interventions to support students with structuring extended essays, dissertations (e.g., EPQ, A‑Level coursework), and synthesizing complex texts.
  • Teach strategies for deep and critical comprehension of academic journals and subject‑specific literature suitable for university preparation.
  • Collaborate with Heads of Department to embed research skills into senior schemes of work.
Student Development Programme (Study Skills & Pre‑U Competencies)
  • Design and implement a Pre‑University Learning Skills Programme covering time management, organisation, effective note‑taking, and critical thinking.
  • Actively consult with the student body to assess their specific learning needs and adapt the programme to suit the changing demands of the student experience.
  • Support students in mastering exam techniques specific to extended response questions and handling primary source material.
Digital Literacy & AI Integration
  • Champion the ethical and effective use of Generative AI tools. Teach students how to use AI for ideation, summarising, and feedback, while maintaining academic integrity.
  • Instruct students on effective digital research, utilising online databases, and adhering to proper citation protocols (Harvard, APA, etc.).
  • Assist in managing and promoting student access to digital research tools and literacy software (e.g., Turnitin, JSTOR, citation managers).
Physical & Digital Resource Management
  • Collaborate with the Head of Library to select, acquire, and catalogue a collection of hard copy and digital resources tailored to senior student interests and university pathways.
  • Design initiatives (reading challenges, guest speakers, academic journals clubs) to foster a culture of voluntary, deep reading among senior students.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Education:

A relevant degree is required (e.g., English, Humanities, Information Science, Education). A teaching qualification (PGCE/QTS) is not required but will be considered an asset.
  • Experience:

Previous experience in a school (Key Stage 4/5) or University support setting is highly helpful. Experience in coaching, tutoring, or library management is desirable.
Skills & Competencies
  • Digital Savvy:
Strong knowledge of current AI platforms (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, etc.) and how they apply to education is critical.
  • Communication:
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to mentor young adults effectively.
  • Initiative:
The ability to build a programme from the ground up, working independently to create resources and schedule support sessions.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • A unique and inspiring work environment comprising state‑of‑the‑art resources and facilities.
  • A robust leadership structure which ensures all colleagues are well supported.
  • A well‑crafted Professional Learning Community which ensures constant growth for individual colleagues and the school as a whole.
