Job SummaryThe Design Engineer – Storage Solutions / Custom Composite Structures & Piping is responsible for the design, analysis, certification, and application engineering of reinforced thermoset plastic (RTP) vessels, tanks, piping systems, and related fiberglass storage solutions in accordance with ASME RTP-1, ASME NM.2, EN 13121, AWWA M45, API 15LR/15HR, and applicable project standards. This role requires strong knowledge of mechanical design, piping applications, laminate mechanics, and composite fabrication methods such as filament winding, contact molding, secondary bonding, and post-cure.
The engineer will perform stress and strain analysis, hydraulic analysis, pipe sizing, design verification, laminate development, and technical evaluations to support quotation, tendering, project execution, manufacturing, inspection, and customer submittals.
- Serve as the technical gatekeeper to ensure FGS products are selected and supplied only for applications within approved service parameters, design limits, and product capabilities.
- Review RFQs, customer specifications, datasheets, drawings, and service conditions to recommend technically compliant and optimized product solutions.
- Develop and certify design calculations, drawings, and specifications for composite vessels, tanks, storage solutions, and piping systems in accordance with ASME RTP-1, ASME NM.2, EN 13121, AWWA M45, API 15LR/15HR, BS 4994, and applicable project standards.
- Perform engineering calculations including pipe properties, hydraulic analysis, pipe sizing, flow mechanics, laminate stress/strain analysis, design verification, and product selection.
- Define laminate architectures, reinforcement sequences, corrosion-barrier configurations, joint details, and liner requirements to meet mechanical, chemical, and service requirements.
- Prepare technical tender packages, Fabricator’s Design Reports, design reports, clarifications, deviations, and customer/regulatory submittals.
- Review and approve fabrication drawings, layout drawings, shop drawings, and BOMs to ensure manufacturability, code compliance, dimensional accuracy, and alignment with design intent.
- Provide engineering support for composite fabrication processes including filament winding, contact molding, secondary bonding, fit-up, assembly, post-cure, testing, inspection, and repair activities.
- Collaborate with Sales, Project Engineering, QA/QC, Manufacturing, Inspection, and Operations to ensure technical compliance and smooth project execution.
- Support technical presentations, customer meetings, product selection discussions, technical clarifications, and customer/job-site visits as required.
- Participate in design reviews, code audits, technical risk reviews, nonconformance investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action recommendations.
- Support qualification testing, material property development, product validation, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance design efficiency, manufacturability, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Materials, or Composite Engineering (or closely related field).
- Minimum 2 years of design and analysis experience with composite pressure vessels, tanks, or piping systems.
- Fluent in English with exceptional technical writing and presentation skills.
- Willingness to travel internationally as required.
- Minimum of 5 years of design and analysis experience with composite pressure vessels, tanks, or piping systems.
- Code Expertise:
Proven working knowledge of ASME RTP-1, ASME NM.2, EN 13121, BS 4994, AWWA M45, and API 15LR/15HR design standards. - Manufacturing Knowledge:
Practical understanding of filament winding, contact molding, secondary bonding, and post-cure processes.
