Job Description
An Optical Technician plays a crucial role in eye care, assisting optometrists and ophthalmologists in providing quality vision care to patients. Working primarily in optical laboratories, retail settings, or medical facilities, an Optical Technician is responsible for crafting and repairing eyeglasses and contact lenses to precise specifications. They work with sophisticated tools and equipment to cut, grind, edge, finish, and adjust lenses and frames.
The role requires a keen eye for detail, technical skills, and often customer service interactions. Dedicated to enhancing the visual health of their patients, Optical Technicians must stay up-to-date with technological advancements in the industry, maintain a meticulous quality of work, and follow strict safety and health protocols. Strong communication skills are also essential, as they frequently advise patients on eyewear options and perform adjustments to meet individual needs.
- Craft, repair, and customize eyeglass lenses and frames with precision.
- Operate specialized machinery for cutting, grinding, and finishing lenses.
- Collaborate with optometrists to interpret prescriptions accurately for lens fabrication.
- Verify finished lenses are in alignment with the prescribed optical specifications.
- Perform quality control checks to ensure lenses meet safety and health standards.
- Analyze and repair frame or lens defects with meticulous attention to detail.
- Advise patients on lens types, coatings, and frame selections suitable for their needs.
- Adhere to laboratory safety guidelines and maintain a clean working environment.
- Keep detailed records of lens prescriptions, orders, and inventory consumables.
- Train junior staff or interns on basic optical laboratory procedures and equipment.
- Maintain and troubleshoot optical machines and laboratory equipment regularly.
- Communicate effectively with patients, addressing any concerns regarding their eyewear.
- High school diploma or equivalent; certification in opticianry preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years experience working in an optical lab or similar setting.
- Proficient in using optical laboratory equipment and tools with accuracy.
- Strong understanding of optics, lens materials, and optical anatomy.
- Excellent manual dexterity and exceptional attention to detail required.
- Outstanding communication skills for effective patient and team interactions.
- Ability to read and interpret prescriptions and technical documents accurately.
