A Medical Coder is an integral part of the healthcare team, responsible for translating healthcare services provided into standardized codes for billing and documentation purposes. This role involves reviewing clinical statements and assigning standard codes using classification systems like ICD-10‑CM (International Classification of Diseases) and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology). Medical Coders play a crucial role in the revenue cycle of healthcare facilities by ensuring that the billing process runs smoothly and efficiently.
They must demonstrate a detail‑oriented approach and possess a strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare procedures. Working both independently and collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, they help maintain compliance with legal standards while optimizing the financial performance of the healthcare facility. - Review and accurately code medical records using ICD-10‑CM and CPT coding systems.
- Ensure completeness of medical documentation to support coding accuracy and compliance.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify diagnosis or procedure codes as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of patient records in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Stay updated with changes in coding regulations and guidelines through continuing education.
- Submit coded information to the billing department to support reimbursement processes.
- Identify discrepancies, errors, or missed information within medical documentation.
- Provide education and training to staff regarding coding policies and procedures.
- Generate coding reports to support clinical and operational decision‑making processes.
- Participate in audits and reviews to ensure compliance with coding standards and practices.
- Utilize electronic health records (EHR) systems to manage and update patient information.
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or equivalent certification is highly preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in medical coding, preferably in a hospital setting.
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10‑CM and CPT coding systems and procedures.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple coding assignments simultaneously.
- Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with healthcare professionals.
- Proficient in using EHR systems and other healthcare management software.
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy in coding and documentation.
