About the Role
The Senior Merchandiser plays a critical role in executing and optimizing the merchandising strategy for the Sports division. This position owns complex product assortments, stock productivity, and category performance, combining commercial planning, data-driven trading, and inventory management to ensure the right product, quantity, and size are in the right location to maximize sales, margin, and sell-through.
The role works cross-functionally with Category Management, Buying, Planning, Allocation, Supply Chain, and Store Operations, while acting as a subject-matter expert and coach to junior merchandising teams.
Key Responsibilities Seasonal & Strategic Planning- Translate category strategy and financial targets into seasonal merchandise plans by channel, country, and store cluster
- Build pre-season assortment frameworks (good/better/best, price ladders, category mix, option counts, depth, and investment)
- Provide Buying teams with clear qualitative and quantitative briefs
- Lead post-season and mid-season reviews, embedding learnings into future assortment, sizing, grading, and launch strategies
- Own category-level KPIs including sales, margin, sell-through, WOS, stock turn, and markdowns
- Track performance versus plan and recommend corrective actions
- Lead weekly and monthly trading meetings, consolidating insights into actionable decisions (rebuys, cancellations, rephasing, promotions, transfers)
- Propose commercial actions such as markdown strategies, promotional mechanics, and product re-positioning
- Partner with Planning and Category Management on OTB usage, intake phasing, and stock exit strategies
- Define inventory targets and guardrails (min/max levels, WOS bands, priority stores)
- Monitor stock health and ensure alignment with category strategy across channels
- Leverage advanced analysis (rate of sale, cohort analysis, store clusters, size curves) to drive targeted decisions
- Develop and maintain robust reporting packs using SAP, Excel, and BI tools
- Identify structural issues (grading, size curves, MOQs) and work on medium- to long-term solutions
- Act as the senior point of contact for Merchandisers and Al locators on category priorities and execution
- Coach and guide junior team members to ensure consistency and best practices
- Partner cross-functionally with Buying, Supply Chain, and Store Operations to drive end-to-end alignment
- Champion process and system improvements within merchandising
- Strong analytical and commercial acumen
- Advanced inventory and stock management expertise
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
- Strong stakeholder management and communication abilities
- Ability to manage multiple categories and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Minimum 6 - 8 years of experience in merchandising roles
- Proven experience in the sports retail industry
- Strong background in inventory management and trading
- Proficiency in SAP ERP and Advanced Excel
