Postdoc position in spatial genomics of aquatic invertebrates (3 years)

Leading a cross‑disciplinary project funded by FOEN/BAFU, the successful applicant will serve as the principal investigator for the One Bio Net ‑G initiative, focusing on genomic diversity of key invertebrate species in Swiss water bodies.

The role is based at Eawag in Duebendorf, Switzerland, and will run for three years from fall 2026.

Project Overview:

The project aims to generate draft genomes for 3–5 EPT (may‑fly, stonefly, caddisfly) species and 2–3 amphipod species, assemble population‑level whole‑genome or ddRAD sequencing data for ~2,000 individuals, and conduct spatially explicit analyses of genetic diversity, connectivity, and adaptive variation. Results will inform a national genetic diversity monitoring programme and provide baseline data for future climate and land‑use change studies.

  • Establish draft genomes for selected EPT and amphipod species.
  • Generate and manage WGS/ddRAD sequencing data for population‑level samples.
  • Analyse genome‑wide genetic and adaptive diversity
, genetic connectivity, inbreeding, and effective population sizes.
  • Conduct spatial analyses linking genetic patterns to river network topology and environmental variables.
  • Develop monitoring strategies and assess feasibility for a national programme.
  • Lead data analysis and interpretation and collaborate with stakeholders (FOEN/BAFU, WSL, UZH, ETH Zurich).

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Molecular Ecology, Ecology, Biodiversity Sciences or a closely related field.
  • Proven laboratory and bioinformatics experience in whole‑genome sequencing and/or ddRAD sequencing.
  • Strong background in analysing genomic data, molecular ecology and ecological theory.
  • Experience or aptitude in spatial distribution modelling and programming (Python, R).
  • Excellent scientific writing skills.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written); additional German or French language skills are desirable.

Benefits and

Working Conditions:

  • Full funding for three years, based on the salary scale for senior research staff.
  • Independent research leadership and involvement in a national monitoring program.
  • Collaborative international environment with leading‑world experts.
  • Location in Duebendorf, Switzerland, with access to Eawag and UZH facilities.

Applications must be submitted by 9 August 2026. Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, diplomas, and references in one PDF file.
