Aanji'bide (Changing our Paths) is a National Institutes of Health-funded research collaboration between a rural Anishinaabe Native Nation and the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth Campus (Principal Investigator - Brenna Greenfield). The purpose of this project is to support and learn about how people using drugs decide if and when to change their drug use, and how Anishinaabe healing practices can support this process.
The Aanji'bide Community Research Helper position is based on or near the Anishinaabe Native Nation. The primary goal of this position is to complete several Talking Circles that are part of Ginaadamaadimin (We Help Each Other), a sub-study of Aanji'bide. Position is for 10 hours/week, with mileage reimbursement available for necessary travel beyond going to and from work. Must have own transportation.
The position is open until filled, and start date is in January of 2026. The position will run through May 31, 2026. If the grant is approved for another year, there is the possibility of an extension.

Responsibilities- Manage dates for Talking Circles, contract for space in community as needed.
- Complete research trainings and University of Minnesota required ethics trainings.
- Manage office and keep research materials well organized and secure.
- Use computer programs to manage research (e.g., Zoom, Box).
- Learn, follow, and complete research protocols for Talking Circles. Suggest and implement any needed modifications.
- Represent the project in the community.
- Oversee and facilitate talking circles, manage research data, supervise talking circle facilitators and any administrative support.
- Managing the contact process for potential participants and invite eligible individuals to participate in the Talking Circles.
- Communicate with Community Action Board, Community Partners, and other team members to complete Talking Circles and work through any questions that arise.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- BA/BS degree plus at least two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least six years.
- Prior work with Indigenous individuals with substance use disorder.
- Experiencing organizing community meetings.
- Knowledge of Anishinaabe Cultural Practices and Tradition.
Pay Range: $32.00 per hour (depending on education/qualifications/experience).
Time Appointment:
Part-Time – 10 hours per week.
Work Location:
Remote.
