Position: ASSISTANT WATCH ENGINEER - RELIEF

Ever-Green Energy is looking for a team member under the direction of the Operating Watch Engineer, performs maintenance and mechanical tasks to ensure reliable, uninterrupted plant operation at Duluth Energy Systems. This is an International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 70 represented position. It is the responsibility of each Ever-Green Energy employee that all tasks be conducted in a safe and efficient manner complying with all local, state, and federal safety and health regulations, company policies, programmatic standards, and special safety concerns identified by Ever-Green Energy for use in a particular area or with a customer.

Duluth Energy Systems is the City-owned steam plant that has provided the Canal Park and Central Business Districts with stable, reliable heat since 1932. The Duluth energy system provides heating to 165 buildings in Canal Park and downtown Duluth.

Minimum

requirements to be successful in this role:
  • A current State of Minnesota First Engineer - Class 1A Boiler Operator License.
  • A broad knowledge of mechanical repair and maintenance with three years' experience operating, maintaining, or servicing high-pressure thermal energy production facilities and distribution systems.
  • Mechanical aptitude and a working knowledge of machinery, piping system and control system fundamentals and operation.
  • Ability to learn, understand and carry out instructions.
  • Ability to multitask and effectively respond to emergency tasks.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous labor in an industrial environment, which may require climbing ladders, confined space entry, removing ash and slag from boilers, handling fuel, etc.
  • Ability to communicate with and work cooperatively with peers and supervisors.
  • The ability and willingness to reliably work a rotating shift schedule.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Starts and stops equipment, aligns systems for operation, monitors and adjusts operating equipment.

2. Makes rounds of plant; records operating conditions.

3. Maintains an accurate log of tasks being completed during the shift.

4. Perform lock-out tag-out.

5. Drain down of equipment to ensure equipment is in a safe state for maintenance.

6. Fills in as an Assistant Watch Engineer to cover employee PTO. Working 10-hour days unless covering as an assistant then 12hr shift.

7. Responsible for the safe reenergization/start-up of equipment and systems.

8. Operates skid-steer loader to move coal, ash and snow.

9. Performs maintenance on thermal energy plant equipment.

10. Communicates with the Operating Watch Engineer concerning the status of equipment and other information relevant to the operation of the plant and distribution system.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

The employee is frequently required to climb ramps/stairs.
