Job Summary

Provide athletic training services to a wide diversity of student-athletes in an athletic or clinical environment, including prevention and assessment of injuries, patient education, treatment, rehabilitation, consultation services, and appropriate referrals to medical professionals.

Key Results & Responsibilities
  • Advises and treats student athletes to maintain physical fitness for participation in athletic competition.
  • Provides daily treatment and rehabilitation of student-athletes for injuries with referrals to appropriate medical personnel as deemed necessary.
  • Evaluates athletes’ physical condition, response, and progress, discussing with the appropriate physician; informs coaches of the status of athletes’ conditions.
  • Provides medical emergency coverage to injured student athletes at practices and athletic events, as needed; performs first responder duties until appropriate medical assistance can be obtained.
  • Ensures compliance with internal policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a variety of records; makes periodic and special reports of work performed.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team
Required Qualifications
  • Graduate of BOC recognized Athletic Training Program
Required Certificates, Licenses, And Registrations
  • Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
  • AED/CPR certification within six (6) months of the date of employment.
  • BOC - Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer
  • Minnesota Board of Medical Practice Registration or eligibility
Required Knowledge And Skills
  • Human anatomy, treating injuries with available modalities, and rehabilitation techniques to be used after an injury is sustained by the athlete.
  • Developing treatment plans for gender-specific injuries and sensitivity to patients with such injuries regardless of gender.
  • Injury prevention.
  • Computer applications related to the work.
Skill In
  • Diagnosing issues, identifying possible causes, and resolving the full range of possible injuries that may commonly occur in athletic events.
  • Providing professional advice and counsel in a respectful and effective manner.
  • Exercising sound independent judgment within general procedural guidelines.
  • Preparing clear, concise, and complete reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
  • Communicating and interacting in a culturally competent manner with a wide diversity of student athletes.
Physical Demands & Working Environment

  • Mobility to work in a typical office and athletic settings and use standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone; strength to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with student-athletes. Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in conditions that include extreme temperatures and loud and constant noise.
  • Must be physically able to provide life-saving techniques. Must be able to travel for long periods of time and possess the agility to perform athletic trainer activities.
  • Work is subject to exposure to adverse environmental conditions and biohazards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CSCS, PES, or comparable certification
  • CPR Instructor Certification
  • Knowledge of learning disabilities and sensitivity to working with and developing effective treatment plans for athletes with learning disabilities.
