Location:

On-Site – Duluth, MN. Classification:
Non-Exempt Hourly, Overtime Available. Shift: 12-Hour Rotating Shift. Training Pay: $24.50/hour. Post-training: $26.00 to $27.50/hour.

This hands-on position offers in-depth technical training and a path to becoming a key lead on the production line, working closely with Production Engineers and Maintenance teams. Training is conducted at one of Sofidel’s state-of-the-art Converting locations and may last from 2 to 5 months. Sofidel covers training costs including travel, hotel accommodations, and a daily stipend. Training periods typically last 2 to 3 weeks with 1 to 2 weeks off as a rotation.

After training, you’ll transition to your full-time role at the Duluth facility.

Ideal candidates are local to the Twin Ports region, have operating or manufacturing experience, are willing to travel for training, and are seeking a long-term, team-based career in a safety-focused culture.

Position Scope

The Machine Operator will set up, operate, and maintain converting machines that perform functions such as rewinding, sawing, banding, wrapping, boxing, or stacking of paper goods. This role monitors quality checks on each shift and may provide training to Operator Assistants. This is a 12-hour rotating shift position. Candidates should possess strong communication skills and be able to lead a team of operators, packaging operators, operator’s assistants, and material handlers.

Essential Job Functions
  • Understand and apply customer specifications to the operation of the machine to ensure finished goods comply with customer requirements.
  • Program and monitor computerized operating panels if applicable. Calculate mathematical conversions to meet product standards.
  • Initiate setup, operation, and adjustment of folding equipment and downstream equipment to achieve production quotas.
  • Perform hourly quality checks and submit daily quality reports to QA.
  • Monitor and perform product changeovers in coordination with other staff to ensure consistent production.
  • Maintain regular and open communications with quality, maintenance, and supervision.
  • Train and monitor the activity of other employees on the machine.
  • Demonstrate leadership on a regular basis.
  • Keep the work area clean and organized in line with lean initiatives.
  • Maintain a safe work area and comply with safety procedures and equipment operating rules.
  • Support Sofidel America’s Good Manufacturing Practices and HACCP to promote a safe workplace.
  • Continuously support Sofidel’s Employee Personal Practice Policy.
Other Duties
  • Perform or assist with operations as required to maintain workflow and meet schedules and quality requirements. Notify supervision of unusual equipment issues and material needs.
  • Participate in meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems, and stay updated on new requirements and policies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED preferred; or 6 to 12 months experience in manufacturing or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally in a team environment.
  • Strong time-management with the ability to prioritize and re-prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and quality manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to perform math calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in all units of measure.
  • Ability to learn and certify in Lift and Crane operation.
  • Ability to use measuring tools and other metrology instruments related to equipment operation.
