What’s the Job?We’re looking for a talented Health and Safety Compliance Lead to join the Estates Department.
This is an important College-wide role, providing professional and practical health and safety advice, guidance and support to managers and colleagues across a diverse range of teaching, learning and working environments.
Working closely with the Facilities Manager, you will help ensure that effective health and safety arrangements are in place across the College, while taking a proactive role in identifying opportunities to improve working practices and strengthen our health and safety culture.
This is a varied and visible role. You will work directly with curriculum and support teams, providing practical advice and constructive challenge, undertaking inspections and audits, supporting risk assessments, investigating incidents and near misses and helping managers identify appropriate and proportionate solutions.
You will also support the development and review of health and safety policies and procedures, monitor actions and compliance, analyse trends, deliver training and awareness activities and help ensure that learning from incidents and reviews leads to sustainable improvements.
Who we’re looking forWe’re looking for someone with professional health and safety experience who combines sound technical knowledge with a practical, approachable and solutions-focused style.
You will be comfortable working independently and engaging proactively with colleagues across the organisation. You will have the confidence to provide professional advice, influence working practices and constructively challenge where improvements are needed, while recognising that effective health and safety is achieved by working collaboratively with managers and staff.
You should also be able to translate legislation and technical requirements into practical advice that makes sense within a busy teaching and operational environment.
To succeed in the role, you will have some or all the following:- A NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, or an equivalent recognised health and safety qualification.
- Demonstrable experience of working in a professional health and safety role and providing practical advice and guidance to managers and colleagues.
- Experience of workplace inspections, audits, risk assessments and monitoring health and safety compliance.
- Experience of investigating accidents, incidents and near misses and identifying appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
- A good working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation, regulations and relevant guidance.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to advise, influence and constructively challenge colleagues at different levels.
- Strong organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify improvements and develop practical solutions.
- The ability to work independently, exercise professional judgement and recognise where specialist advice is required.
- A full UK driving licence.
- Proficiency in digital skills relevant to the role, including experience of Microsoft Office and relevant systems, together with a willingness to continue developing your digital capabilities.
- Experience with in a complex or multi-site organisation, practical or vocational environments, contractor/construction activities or fire safety would be advantageous but is not essential.
