As a Radiological Protection/ Environmental Safety Engineer Engineer at #Torness Power Station, you'll play a vital role in delivering radiation protection and radiological protection standards that support nuclear safety, safe operations, and the station's progression into defuelling and decommissioning.
Reporting to the Environmental Safety Group Head, you'll receive structured training towards Accredited Health Physicist status while providing expert support across safety-critical activities. Working full time on site at #Torness Power Station, you'll join a highly skilled team responsible for maintaining the highest standards of radiological safety. You'll contribute to EDF's journey towards An Electric Britain while developing specialist expertise within one of the UK's most highly regulated industries.
You'll Be Doing
- Providing advice and technical oversight on radiological protection arrangements, including dose assessment, radiation monitoring instrumentation, protective equipment, radioactive material control, and radioactive material transport.
- Supporting radiological protection programmes, including dosimetry, dose control, contamination control, radiation risk assessments and application of ALARP principles.
- Managing specifications, work instructions and other control documents to maintain radiological safety standards.
- Contributing to radiological protection training and communication programmes, while sharing best practice across EDF Nuclear Operations.
- Building effective relationships with operational teams, regulators and external stakeholders, while supporting team business plans and continuous improvement initiatives.
- A relevant HNC (or equivalent qualification).
- Experience applying technical analysis and making sound decisions using written, verbal and numerical information.
- Knowledge of radiological protection principles and practices, including one or more of dosimetry, dose control, contamination control, dose assessment, radiation risk assessment, instrumentation or ALARP.
- Experience working within a highly regulated industry environment.
- The ability to maintain high standards of nuclear, radiological, environmental, industrial and personal safety.
A degree in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or a related scientific discipline would be advantageous, as would a postgraduate qualification in Radiological Protection. Knowledge of radiological protection legislation, Nuclear Site Licence requirements and Emergency Plan arrangements would also be beneficial.
Candidates with one or more of the following may have an advantage:
- Hold, or be working towards, Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) certification.
- Hold, or be working towards, Chartered status in Radiological Protection.
- Experience providing Radiological Protection advice or related duties.
- Experience of regulatory engagement and external stakeholder management.
- External qualifications or specialist training in Radiological Protection.
To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years. You will be required to undertake a role in the emergency scheme leading to that of Emergency Scheme Health Physicist. This necessitates you being on a standby rota and requires that you are within a 45 minutes' drive of Torness Power Station.
