The sterile processing technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, packaging, disinfection, and sterilization of medical and surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies. Service delivery is consistent with ANSI/AAMI, APIC, AORN, and CMS guidelines, rules, and regulations. The technician promotes an inter‑professional culture of collaborative decision‑making, innovation, lifelong learning, and teamwork, exemplifying the principles of a Culture of Safety by committing to a Just Culture.
Responsibilities(essential functions)
- Collecting used and contaminated equipment, instruments, and supplies for sorting and decontamination.
- Manually cleaning contaminated equipment and instruments.
- Operating and maintaining decontamination and sterilization equipment.
- Inspecting instruments and equipment for meticulous cleaning and proper functioning.
- Sorting, preparing, and packaging instruments for sterilization.
- Monitoring and operating sterilization equipment.
- Troubleshooting equipment and promptly reporting any issues or problems.
- Ensuring operation of equipment by verifying daily testing and preventive maintenance, calling for repairs, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Preparing and delivering equipment and instruments to the proper storage area.
- Maintaining records of testing, cleaning, and sterilization procedures.
- Maintaining professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities.
- Maintaining a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information and participating in team problem‑solving methods.
- Regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
- Adhering to safety protocols at all times.
- Meeting DRH policy employment conditions, including required vaccinations.
- Implementing DRH Standards of Behavior and exhibiting behaviors consistent with DRH core values.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
- Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to send/receive/email, navigate information technology, and use Electronic Health Record tools.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to remain flexible to quickly adapt to urgent situations.
- Ability to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment, and techniques to accomplish job requirements.
- Must be able to take call and respond within 45 minutes.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations- Current certification in sterile reprocessing (CRCST).
- For positions requiring travel, a current valid driver’s license and automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
This is a “Safety‑Sensitive” Position as defined by Oklahoma law. Applicants must not test positive for THC in any pre‑employment or subsequent drug test. This applies even if the applicant has a valid medical marijuana card. The position requires respirator and fit testing for all team members at risk for airborne exposures or caustic chemicals. Vaccinations are required per DRH policy;
medical and religious exemptions are available upon request.
