Introduction

Anticipated openings for the  School Year. The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community that, in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners. We are looking for dedicated individuals to join us in educating the children at MSD.

We are currently accepting applications to create a pool of qualified individuals who can work on an as-needed basis to temporarily assist in the Dorm program.

Main Purpose of Job

A Residential Child and Youth Care Practitioner (RCYCP) at MSD provides guidance to deaf and hard of hearing students by serving as a mentor and role model, offering advice and assistance with daily life skills, and referring students to other staff. Employees work under general supervision and may need to travel for events. Work hours may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe environment and supervise students at all times.
  • Communicate with students to discuss problems, offer guidance, and serve as a role model.
  • Monitor and assist students with daily schedules, including homework, hygiene, and meals.
  • Observe and interact to prevent conflicts and disturbances.
  • Implement rewards and disciplinary measures as directed.
  • Document and report student issues to supervisors.
  • Assist in classroom instruction through tutoring.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Must be 21+ with a high school diploma or equivalent, or 18+ with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.

    Experience: At least 1 year guiding deaf and hard of hearing youth in daily life skills. Fluency in American Sign Language required.

    Note: Additional education can substitute for experience at a rate of 60 credit hours per year of experience.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Knowledge of deafness aspects.
    • Fluent American Sign Language skills.
    • Proficiency in written English.
    • Ability to learn emergency medical procedures.
    • Ability to foster a positive dorm environment.
    • Harmonious working relationships with students and staff.
    Licenses and Certifications
    • RCYCP certification required.
    • Valid Maryland driver’s license if operating a vehicle.
    • CPR and First Aid certifications, maintained current.
    Special Requirements
    • Proficiency in American Sign Language and written English.
    • Pass medical and TB screening.
    • Subject to substance abuse testing and criminal background check.
    • Provide three letters of recommendation.

    Benefits

    Eligible contractual employees working 30+ hours/week may receive subsidized health benefits, paying 25% of premiums. Other benefits include dental, life insurance, and leave accrual.
