Role Overview – Our Dundee office is recruiting a Civil Engineer to join our team. This opportunity would suit someone with post graduate civil engineering experience.
The successful candidate will have a fantastic opportunity to work in one of the UK’s leading private engineering consultancies, delivering projects across the commercial, retail, residential and industrial sectors. All engineers work under the direct supervision of our highly experienced directors and collaborate with a dedicated team of engineers and technicians.
We offer an ICE approved training agreement and a structured pathway towards chartered membership of a professional engineering institution. As you progress, you can expect to be active on a number of projects and with a diverse range of clients at any given time.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIESTechnical & Design
- Design infrastructure for commercial, retail, residential and industrial sectors including:
- SUDS drainage systems
- Roads to adoptable standards
- DMRB‑compliant highways
- Undertake technical analysis and design using software such as PDS, Micro Drainage and AutoCAD.
- Carry out site inspections, surveys, and technical assessments to inform design solutions.
- Produce high‑quality design deliverables, drawings and technical reports.
Project Management
- Manage workload across multiple live projects, ensuring alignment with agreed programme timelines and budgets.
- Support preparation of project documentation including specifications, risk assessments and design programmes.
- Assist in coordinating multidisciplinary project input and tracking progress against key milestones.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with statutory bodies including local drainage authorities and highways departments.
- Attend design meetings, site meetings and client consultations as required.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues, clients, contractors and external partners.
- Provide advice and guidance on technical matters relating to civil engineering design and infrastructure delivery.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure all work complies with relevant technical standards, regulations, and best practice guidelines.
- Contribute to internal quality review processes, including checking and self‑checking design work.
- Work with consideration to agreed project budgets, risk management procedures and health & safety requirements.
- Support junior engineers and technicians, offering guidance on technical tasks and professional development.
- Demonstrate a proactive, positive approach to teamwork and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to a collaborative, inclusive work environment aligned with Fairhurst’s ethos and values.
- Produce and check structural calculations, analysis models, and drawings for steel, concrete, timber, and masonry structures in accordance with UK codes and Eurocodes.
- Develop concept, scheme, and detailed designs; prepare specifications and schedules; and contribute to design risk assessments (CDM).
- Lead the structural workstream for assigned projects, coordinating inputs with civil, geotechnical, and other disciplines to deliver fully integrated designs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
- Working toward or holding professional accreditation (e.g., ICE, IOM3, or similar).
Experience
- Post graduate experience in civil engineering, ideally within a consultancy environment.
- Demonstrated experience in the design and delivery of infrastructure projects, including drainage, highways and public realm schemes.
- Proven ability to undertake site inspections, surveys and technical assessments to inform engineering solutions.
