Research Assistant

Grade 6 (£32,079.92 - £37,694.44 pro rata)

Part time, 21 hours per week (0.6 FTE)

Fixed term (for a period of 12 weeks)

Abertay is a modern university with a global outlook, rooted in its local and national communities. We have made our mark with high quality, well-directed teaching and research, and a stimulating and enriching experience for our students.

The Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences is home to internationally recognised research that addresses real-world challenges and delivers meaningful societal impact. You will be based in the Department for Sociological and Psychological Sciences, a welcoming and supportive academic community committed to research excellence, high-quality teaching, and meaningful engagement beyond the University.

Reporting to Dr Julie Gawrylowicz, you will join an exciting Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR)- funded project, Enhancing Witness Statement Taking with Edge AI. The project sits at the intersection of cognitive psychology, forensic psychology and Artificial Intelligence, examining how emerging technologies might support the collection of accurate and reliable witness evidence. Working with researchers from Abertay University and the University of Aberdeen, you will contribute to research with genuine potential to influence policing practice and policy.

As a Research Assistant, you will play a key role in the project, supporting participant recruitment, data collection, data management, analysis, and engagement with policing stakeholders. You will gain hands-on experience in applied cognitive and forensic psychology research, collaborate with academic and professional partners, and contribute to activities that may lead to conference presentations, research publications, and impact-focused outputs.

The ideal candidate will hold, or be close to completing, a degree in Psychology and have a strong interest in technology and Artificial Intelligence. They will be curious about how AI can be applied responsibly in real-world settings such as policing and the criminal justice system. Experience using AI tools in research, study, or personal projects would be advantageous, although formal training in computer science is not required.

This role offers an outstanding foundation for a future career in research or postgraduate study. You will join a supportive team committed to helping you develop your research skills, professional network, and academic ambitions.

If you believe you have the skills and experience for this exciting and challenging role, please submit your application through our online recruitment system.
