Position: Central / West Tunnel Practice Lead

Overview

Pay

Base pay range: $/yr - $/yr

Responsibilities
  • Primary Responsibilities
    • Direct involvement and oversight on select tunnel projects
    • Advising on alternatives analyses and feasibility studies related to tunnels
    • Risk management and awareness of the WBG tunneling portfolio
    • Subconsultant vetting and risk management, including required QA activities and scope provisions
    • Assessment and enhancement of HDR’s capabilities regarding tunnel construction and trenchless technologies (SEM, NATM)
    • Collaboration with HDR’s WBG Tunnel Practice Lead and Geotechnical Cross Sector
    • Verification of qualifications and training of field staff assigned to construction phase services related to tunnels
  • Secondary Responsibilities
    • Cost engineering support
    • Bench‑depth management for tunnel instrumentation, mechanical, civil, and consulting design support
    • Assessment of terrestrial and marine construction capabilities
    • Numerical modeling to support tunnel projects (ground/structure interaction, underpinning of buildings and utilities)
    • Technologies for coordination/production of design calculations, design products, and contract documents
    • Site characterization and geotechnical evaluations
    • Construction engineering support
    • Inspections and condition assessments
    • Resiliency, operations, and emergency response issues
Qualifications Preferred
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or related field
  • Strong communication and coordination skills within an integrated multidisciplinary team
  • U.S. focused tunneling design and construction experience
  • Leadership of tunnel and underground facilities for major projects
  • Expertise in rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and geotechnical engineering
  • Experience with SEM, NATM, SCL, EPBM, cut‑and‑cover techniques
  • Track record of technical publications and professional organization participation
  • Ph.D. in engineering or related field (desired)
  • Experience managing staff, clients, and contracts; hiring staff in a consulting firm (desired)
  • Excellent marketing and business development skills; relationships in the business class discipline (desired)
  • Experience in numerical analysis (FLAC, UDEC, PHASES2, PLAXIS, MIDAS, MODFLOW, etc.) (plus)
  • Ground‑structure interaction modeling (FEM or similar) (plus)
  • Large‑scale underground projects, urban tunneling, tunnel rehabilitation experience (plus)
  • Robust interpersonal skills and professional demeanor (plus)
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • 10 years related experience
  • Minimum 5 years project management experience
  • Professional engineering license (PE or P.Eng) recognized in the location of the position (required)
  • MS Office and MS Project experience (Access experience is a plus)
  • Demonstrated leadership, business development, and strategic planning skills
  • Active participation in the employee‑owned culture (required)
