Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, officiate one or more sports including, but not limited to flag football, basketball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, hockey, soccer and ultimate frisbee for leagues and/or tournament play.
EssentialJob Duties
- Keep abreast of current trends, rule changes and other pertinent information.
- Attend preseason in-service training.
- Assist with canceling games when necessary.
- Responsible for returning any issued equipment.
- Conduct oneself professionally at all times.
- Ensure guidelines, rules and sportsmanship are enforced.
- Officiate assigned games for leagues and tournament play.
- Assist in field/court setup and take down.
- Conduct safety and related inspections.
- Report any field/court problems to site supervisor or Recreation Supervisor.
- Report any problems with captains, coaches, players, parents or spectators to site supervisor or Recreation Supervisor.
- Ensure safety of staff, participants and spectators.
- The official will arrive at scheduled time and work until all tasks are completed.
- The official will talk with each coach or captain before the game and review any ground rules, unusual circumstances or local facility hazards.
- The official will ensure all players are in proper uniform including required protective gear.
- The official checks all equipment and playing area for safety hazards.
- The official will remain unbiased while officiating a contest and will avoid verbal contact with spectators.
- The official will approach his/her position as a representative of the City of Durango, displaying respect for the facility, participants, parents, spectators and co-workers.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a City Parks and Recreation Department.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Mature, responsible personality.
- Thorough knowledge of rules, officiating techniques and responsibilities.
- Previous officiating experience preferred.
- Ability to communicate, be courteous and cooperate with other staff members and the public.
- Ability to operate sports equipment related to the program.
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Work independently or with other official(s) on assigned games/matches.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Maintain mental capacity that allows the capability of effectively interacting and communicating with others.
- Pass a criminal background check.
- Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- Prefer umpire/referee/official certification for the designated sport.
- Must have knowledge of the specific sport being officiated. Prefer some officiating experience.
- Certification preferred, but not required.
- Indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, irregular work hours; may work in or around water and slippery surfaces.
- Periods of mobility with light and heavy physical activity.
- Frequent exposure to heat, cold and wet/humid conditions; continual field work; moderate mental effort required daily; moderate mental pressure due to interpersonal conflicts; moderate physical exertion due to running with the game if necessary; hours worked may vary.
