Snowplow Driver / Heavy Equipment Operator Position Summary

This position works to maintain the safety of campus by removing snow and ice from campus roadways and parking lots. The work is carried out by operating and maintaining snow removal equipment such as plow trucks with sanders, front‑end loaders, backhoes, and skid‑steer loaders. This is a part‑time, on‑call position that works on an "as needed" basis determined by weather conditions.

Job Description

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Operate vehicles and equipment such as plow trucks, front‑end loaders, backhoes and skid‑steer loaders to remove snow and ice from campus roadways and parking lots.
  • Apply traction / de‑icing media to roads and parking lots as needed to ensure safe driving conditions.
  • Work on an on‑call, as‑needed basis and be available for work 24/7 as required by weather conditions.
  • Use hand tools to perform minor repairs such as changing cutting edges on snow plows.
  • Perform pre‑shift and post‑shift equipment checks to ensure vehicles and equipment are operating correctly. Identify potential problems and report or correct as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Specialized Skills, and Experience

  • Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Insurable through Fort Lewis College insurance carrier.
  • Ability to work independently to accomplish tasks.
  • Ability to take written and verbal direction and act upon it accordingly.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience operating large snow removal equipment including plow trucks, sanders, front‑end loaders, backhoes, and skid‑steer loaders.
  • Ability to perform duties in and around regular traffic flow.

Preferred Education, Specialized Skills, and Experience

  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair minor vehicle and equipment problems.
  • One or more years of experience working in an institutional setting.
  • Basic computer experience related to reporting time worked and duties performed.
  • Ability to work in a team setting to accomplish goals.

Reports to Physical Plant Services Assistant Director of Operations and Maintenance in charge of snow removal.

Work Environment
  • Moderate to heavy noise associated with running equipment.
  • Ability to sit and drive for extended periods of time.
  • Routine exposure outside winter weather environment including cold and wet conditions.
Physical Demands
  • Stand, sit, walk, kneel, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate vehicles, equipment, and tools.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close and far vision as related to driving.
  • Light to moderate lifting regularly; heavy lifting on occasions.
FLSA Status / Position Type / Expected Hours / Salary Range
  • Exempt from Colorado State Classified System.
  • Paid hourly; qualifies for overtime.
  • Part‑time, "as needed".
  • Temporary 6‑month position – Oct 15th through Apr 15th.
  • Schedule determined by weather conditions; overtime can be expected.
Hourly Rate / Salary

The hourly rate is $26.75.
