Alfred H Knight has an exciting opportunity for an HSE Coordinator to join the team based in Durban, South Africa. The HSE Coordinator is responsible for the effective management, coordination, and implementation of the company’s Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) requirements at the Durban Metals and Minerals and Agri operations. This role ensures compliance with relevant legislation, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and company HSE policies and procedures.

To be successful at Alfred H Knight the incumbent will need to display the following:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Operationally responsible for:

  • Promote HSE awareness, skills development, and training across all employee levels.
  • Implement and maintain ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 Standards.
  • Assist with Risk Assessments, internal and external audits, and corrective/preventive actions.
  • Coordinate HSE-related projects, KPI performance, and Safety Management System roll-outs.
  • Conduct inspections/site visits, provide guidance, and drive improvements.
  • Evaluate business processes and procedures for changes or amendments as required.
  • Coordinate Occupational Hygiene Surveys, Medical Surveillance, and Biological Monitoring Programs.
  • Facilitate HSE training and provide guidance on safety initiatives.
  • Report non-conformances, monitor progress, and ensure timely close-out.
  • Ensure proper use of equipment and address hazards proactively.
  • Maintain and update PPE records and order supplies timely.
  • Update HSE, General, and HR noticeboards as required.
  • Attend and manage HSE meetings, and champion assigned HSE projects.
  • Perform other reasonable tasks as assigned by the Branch/Lab Manager or Safety Manager/Officer.
Health and Safety
  • Participate in HSE inspection programs using principles of planned task observation and proactively prevent non-conformances
  • Ensure the Company’s Health and Safety policy is applied effectively in all areas visited.
  • Report any incidents during working hours within 12 hours and carry out incident/accident investigations.
  • Observe and comply with operational requirements and safety regulations applicable to your work area. Non-compliance will be considered serious misconduct, and the Employee indemnifies the Employer against any liability resulting from injury or illness due to non-compliance with safety measures.
  • Report any deviations to the Safety Manager/Officer and the Agri/Operation Manager.
Human Resource Management
  • Uphold the Company Code of Conduct by ensuring consistent application of disciplinary rules.
  • Maintain a professional standard and appearance during office hours and while representing the Company internally and externally.
Teamwork
  • Work collaboratively with all Production and Technical Teams toward achieving team goals, understanding priorities and pressures.
  • Support cooperative working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
Ad-hoc Projects / Other
  • Perform ad hoc duties of an appropriate nature as requested by the Laboratory Manager or Laboratory/Operation Manager.
  • Carry out any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the direct Laboratory Manager, Laboratory/Operation Manager, or Safety Manager/Officer.
Required Competencies
  • Good knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health and Safety regulations
  • Computer Literate
  • Good timekeeping and time management skills
  • Quality : ‘Right first time’ approach, completes work to a high standard, continually looking for improvements, and strong problem-solvers, high level of attention to detail is key within this role
