Operations Manager
Job Description
A position exists for a Mechanical Engineer at the Sherwin-Williams South Africa manufacturing site based in Durban, KZN. Responsible for a small team, this role requires understanding of engineering operations within an MHI and will report to the Operations Director.
Responsibilities- Enforce safe systems of work and hold those below in the management structure and contractors accountable for their health and safety performance.
- Provide safe equipment and working environment, ensuring employees/contractors wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Ensure employees within the department are informed, instructed, trained and supervised to safely carry out work.
- Maintain a safe working environment, striving for zero recordable injuries in compliance with internal policies and external legislation; deliver key enabling activities such as Near Misses, Safety Observations, timely completion of actions; investigate safety and environmental incidents and establish countermeasures.
- Interpret and apply department policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations; ensure compliance.
- Ensure maintenance schedules, programs, quality initiatives, safety targets, efficiency metrics, and other operational measurements are met.
- Drive the Engineering department to consistent and safe methods of work through Risk Assessments and procedures.
- Manage employees and contractors involved in maintenance, capital improvement, and updating of equipment, machinery, and the location; allocate resources to meet operational demand and respond to complex questions.
- Develop, analyze and review a variety of complex operational reports to examine equipment usage, preventative maintenance, efficiency, quality, and other areas; implement operational changes as required.
- Oversee activities among various departments on a project basis, such as engineering, operations, safety, and quality control to monitor and update operations, processes, equipment, and related areas and implement adjustments.
- Develop operating policies and procedures to ensure efficient use of resources, maintain a safe environment, and produce quality products.
- Create and maintain a culture of continuous improvement, quality, high performance, and process excellence.
- Lead budget development and spending control for the department; prepare cost justifications and project requests for improvement projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience Requirements:
- 5+ years post-qualification experience, including at least 2 years within a hazardous manufacturing environment.
- Awareness of MHI regulations.
- Working knowledge of applicable legislation including South African Health and Safety legislation.
Educational Requirements:
- Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering required. BTech Qualification with GCC also accepted.
