Job SummaryThe Estimator will prepare accurate cost estimates for mechanical and piping projects, analysing drawings, specifications, materials and labour.This role ensures competitive, market-aligned bids while maintaining profitability, reporting to the operations manager but also dealing closely with the Director.Key ResponsibilitiesReview project plans, specifications, and site conditions to perform quantity take-offs for piping and mechanical related scopes.Develop detailed cost estimates, including labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and overheads; incorporate value engineering to meet client budgets.Prepare bid documents, RFPs and proposals, coordinate with engineering, procurement, and construction teams for inputs on technical and commercial parameters.Maintain estimating databases, productivity rates, escalation indices, and historical cost data; analyse bid vs. actual costs for process improvements.Support risk assessments, kick-off meetings, and post-bid analysis; liaise with clients and suppliers for clarifications and pricing.Actively source and identify new work opportunities to price, including reviewing tender portals, networking with clients/suppliers, and pursuing leads in Durban's mechanical/piping market.
Required Qualifications and Experience
National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or related field.5+ years' experience as a Mechanical/Piping Estimator in construction or engineering, with a proven track recordStrong knowledge of piping materials, mechanical systems, construction methods, and South African standards (e.g., SANS).Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Accubid, Candy, or OST) and MS Office Suite (Excel advanced).Key Skills and CompetenciesDetail-oriented with excellent numerical and analytical skills for accurate forecasting.Strong communication (written/oral) for team coordination and client interactions.Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and resolve complex issues under pressure.
