Senior Process Safety Engineer - Petrochemical Operations

Our client is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Process Safety Engineer to bolster their operational safety team in Durban. This critical role is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of process safety across their petrochemical facilities, focusing on hazard identification, risk assessment, and the implementation of robust safety management systems. You will play a key role in safeguarding personnel, assets, and the environment by promoting a strong safety culture and driving continuous improvement in safety performance.

This position requires a proactive individual with exceptional analytical skills and a deep understanding of chemical process hazards.

• Conduct and lead Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) such as HAZOP, LOPA, and What-If studies for new and existing processes.
• Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Process Safety Management (PSM) systems and procedures.
• Perform incident investigations and root cause analyses, recommending and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Ensure compliance with relevant national and international process safety regulations and standards.
• Review engineering designs and modifications to ensure they meet process safety requirements.
• Deliver process safety training and foster a strong safety culture among operations and engineering staff.

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in process safety engineering within the petrochemical, oil & gas, or chemical industry.
• In-depth knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) principles, including PHA methodologies, mechanical integrity, and management of change.
• Experience with safety instrumented systems (SIS) design and functional safety (e.g., IEC 61511).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical information effectively.
• Professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CCPSC) are highly advantageous.
