Position: Primary Care Drug Therapy (PCDT) Pharmacist - (KZN)

Patient Care and Clinical Services

  • Conduct consultations and assessments for patients presenting with minor ailments within the pharmacist’s scope of practice.
  • Prescribe, dispense, and manage treatment according to Primary Care Drug Therapy protocols and evidence-based guidelines.
  • Provide counselling on medicine use, adherence, lifestyle modifications, and health promotion.
Compliance and Regulatory Duties
  • Ensure compliance with SAPC GPP standards, the Pharmacy Act 53 of 1974, and the Medicines Act 101 of 1965.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure confidentiality in line with POPIA regulations.
  • Comply with reporting requirements for adverse drug reactions, pharmacovigilance, and controlled medicines.
  • Support internal audits and inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.
Medicines Management and Stock Control
  • Ensure the safe and effective management of all pharmacy stock, including scheduled and thermolabile medicines.
  • Monitor stock levels, expiry dates, and apply Just-In-Time (JIT) inventory principles.
  • Quarantine expired, damaged, or returned medicines in compliance with GPP standards.
Health Promotion and Community Engagement
  • Conduct patient education on preventive health, rational medicine use, and vaccination campaigns.
  • Participate in community outreach initiatives, mobile clinics, and public health programs.
  • Provide health promotion and disease prevention advice as part of integrated primary care services.
Professional Development and Training
  • Maintain competence in primary care drug therapy through ongoing professional development.
  • Mentor and support interns, pharmacy assistants, or students where applicable.
  • Keep updated with changes in legislation, clinical guidelines, and GPP standards.
Quality Assurance and Risk Management
  • Identify and report dispensing errors, stock discrepancies, and operational risks.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives within the pharmacy.
  • Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control measures and occupational safety protocols.
