Purpose of RoleTo provide a professional occupational health service in the operation/s, within a legal and ethical framework, to ensure a healthy and productive workforce
Key Responsibilities- Provision of medical surveillance programme
- Plan medical surveillance programme for the operation with and signed off by Occupational Health Medical Practitioner (OMP)
- Conduct pre‑employment medicals according to relevant legal prescriptions, work risk factors and health profile of individual employees. Conduct exit medicals to detect and exclude possible occupational diseases related to occupational exposure
- Identify and ensure early and prompt intervention measures for affected employees and refer where appropriate.
- Report all injuries on duty and any occupational injuries to the Compensation Commissioner
- Induct new employees in Occupational Health and Safety
- Advise on injuries off / on duty in relation to work requirements
- Conduct multidisciplinary health risk and occupational injury assessments
- Monitor work processes and identify new health risks and hazards, report on identified trends, unsafe/risky situations and practices and ensure preventative measures are implemented
- Identify and provide recommendations regarding the control of health and safety risk exposures
- Assist with requirements with any pandemics
- Plan, organise and manage various Occupational Health related projects, e.g.: HIV/Aids programme, Hearing Conservation programme, Medical surveillance
- Advise line management on occupational health matters, any factors threatening health and safety of employees and provide input into incident investigations
- Provide a limited primary health care service. Treat minor ailments and injuries and refer when necessary
- Monitor and track chronic conditions and confirm level of risk to the organisation
- Stabilize medical emergencies and refer when necessary
- Control the operational health clinic budget
- Ensure a continuous supply and availability of suppliers, equipment and medication
- Plan, organise and evaluate occupational health service for the operation
- Ensure basic legal compliance, follow standard operating procedures, relevant legislation, Scope of Nursing Practice and company policies
- Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity when dealing with sensitive matters. Communicate and ensure maintenance of right to know in keeping with all legal requirements
- Maintain annual registration with professional bodies
- Ensure all medical records of employees are maintained and updated
- Implement administrative systems and procedures
- Provide statistical reporting to agreed timelines
- Focus on preventative measures and behaviour changes to prevent disease
- Present health/safety topics regularly, with the wellness team, according to the rhythm set at the operation. Ensure these topics relate to identified trends
- Plan and implement Wellness Day programme, together with Wellness team, track and follow up on identified trends and compile report
- Liaise with service providers
- Ensure compliance with the OHS Act on recommended number of trained first aiders
- Provide awareness and education on matters relating to Occupational Health to the business
- Form part of the team to develop emergency protocol
- Ensure processes are in place to prioritise and triage patients in the event of an emergency, including roles of first aiders and emergency response staff
- Ensure availability of medication and equipment in case of an emergency
- Contact other members of the multidisciplinary health team when assistance is required
- Complete return to work medical assessment and issue fitness certificate
- Refer employee to other medical resources if there is a need
- Diploma in General Nursing, OR Diploma in Occupational Health (preferred)
- Audiometry registration with SASOHN (advantageous)
- Dispensing licence
- Nursing Act and Medicines and Controlled substances Act
- Basic Conditions of Employment Act (advantageous)
- Operation of related equipment
- At least 2 years Occupational Health experience
- Experience in a manufacturing environment (Advantageous)
