Introduction:

Join a leading private hospital in Durban as a Theatre Qualified Registered Nurse. We are seeking a highly skilled, compassionate, and dedicated nursing professional with strong theatre experience, excellent clinical expertise, and a passion for delivering exceptional patient care within a dynamic surgical environment.

Key Performance Areas:
  • Deliver comprehensive, safe, and evidence-based nursing care to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures.
  • Prepare the operating theatre, equipment, instruments, and sterile supplies according to the requirements of scheduled surgical procedures.
  • Scrub and assist surgeons and other members of the surgical team during procedures.
  • Circulate during surgical procedures, ensuring the availability of equipment, instruments, medication, and additional supplies as required.
  • Maintain strict aseptic technique and always ensure compliance with infection prevention and control protocols.
  • Conduct accurate surgical counts of instruments, swabs, needles, and other theatre consumables in accordance with hospital policies and patient safety standards.
  • Assist with the positioning and preparation of patients for surgical procedures, ensuring patient safety, dignity, and comfort.
  • Monitor patients closely throughout the perioperative period and promptly identify and report any changes in their clinical condition.
  • Safely administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with hospital policies, protocols, and professional standards.
  • Assist with emergency procedures and respond effectively to unexpected clinical situations within the theatre environment.
  • Operate and monitor specialised theatre equipment and ensure that all equipment is checked, maintained, and safely used.
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing colleagues, and the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive patient documentation in accordance with legal, ethical, and professional standards.
  • Ensure compliance with patient safety standards, quality assurance requirements, infection prevention protocols, and hospital policies.
  • Participate in stock control, ensuring that theatre consumables, equipment, and sterile supplies are adequately maintained and available.
  • Support and contribute to the efficient running of the theatre and ensure that operating lists are managed effectively.
  • Provide support, mentorship, and guidance to junior nursing staff, students, and newly appointed team members.
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and the implementation of evidence-based practices within the theatre environment.
  • Maintain professional competency through continuous professional development and adherence to SANC standards and regulations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to remain calm, professional, and clinically effective within a fast-paced and demanding surgical environment.
Education:
  • Diploma/Degree in Nursing.
  • Postgraduate Diploma/Qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science.
  • Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered/General Nurse.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience within an operating theatre environment.
  • Previous experience as a Theatre Qualified Registered Nurse is essential.
  • Sound knowledge of theatre nursing principles, surgical procedures, aseptic technique, and infection prevention and control.
  • Experience in scrubbing, circulating, and assisting within a theatre environment.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure surgical environment.
  • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • BLS certification advantageous.
  • ACLS certification advantageous.
