Job Overview
City of Durham Summer/Seasonal School Age Care Program Assistant – 20‑40 hours per week, Monday‑Friday shifts 7:30 am–6:00 pm with some evenings and weekends. Hourly rate: $18.46–$20.35.
Location:
Various Recreation Centers.
- Takes responsibility for the health, well‑being, and safety of participants of all skill levels and abilities.
- Organizes and facilitates youth sports, games and activities, arts and crafts, music and drama, and other recreational activities.
- Engages with participants, learning their likes and dislikes and guiding them in successfully participating in all aspects of program activities.
- Collaborates with supervisor, other staff, and volunteers to conduct activities.
- Assists with personal care, mobility, communication, and other basic needs.
- Recognizes and responds to opportunities for group and individual problem solving.
- Provides opportunities for the group so that everyone has an experience of success.
- Sets a good example for participants in all areas, including cleanliness, punctuality, cleaning up after activities, observing rules, and sportsmanship.
- Monitors participant behavior, assesses its appropriateness, enforces safety regulations and emergency procedures, and applies behavior management techniques.
- Observes necessary precautions to secure the safety of recreation participants and spectators, renders first aid in case of minor injury.
- Attends and participates in staff meetings, in‑service training programs, orientations, and evaluation sessions.
- Communicates regularly with supervisor regarding concerns, updates, and challenges.
- Assists in planning and conducting special events and projects and encourages participation.
- Assists in completing behavior, accident, and other program reports as needed and submits required paperwork on time.
- Encourages respect for personal property, City equipment and facilities.
- Performs duties in the setting of After School, Intersession, and Fun Day programs.
- Provides homework assistance using available resources.
- Manages indoor and outdoor recreation activities in all weather types.
- Provides in‑water supervision of program participants (swimming).
- Performs duties in the setting of Summer Camp programs.

- Group recreational supervision and rules governing various competitive games, including athletics.
- Basic arts and crafts.
- Basic behavior management skills.
- Elementary math, science, writing, etc.
- Interacting positively and communicating effectively with children and adults.
- Organizing and actively facilitating a variety of recreational and social activities.
- Communicating instructions effectively to individuals and groups.
- Adhering to program standards and objectives.
- Following directions and completing assigned tasks.
- Exhibiting character, integrity, and adaptability.
- Report writing and record keeping.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSET, TASC).
- Six (6) months of experience working with youth in organized activities.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Experience working with children ages 5‑12.
- Ability to manage behavior expectations, engage participants, and encourage participation of ages 5‑12.
