Church Organist

Position Summary

The Church Organist serves as an integral part of worship at Aldersgate UMC, providing organ and piano music and accompaniment for weekly worship services and special events. This part‑time position collaborates closely with the Director of Music and Senior Pastor to enhance the overall worship experience.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Play the organ and piano for all services weekly; including service music for prelude, postlude, hymns, offertory, accompanying choirs and soloists, etc., as well as congregational singing.

Provide music needed for special services, including but not limited to:
Advent and Holy Week services.

Attend and participate in choir rehearsals, including but not limited to Chancel Choir and Children’s Choir.

Work in concert with the Director of Music, Pastors, and Worship Committee to enhance worship services.

Assist in provision of qualified substitutes in all absences.

Seek professional relationships with other church musicians and keep abreast of developments in worship and liturgy through associations, continuing education, and professional church publications.

Fees for weddings and funerals are not provided by the church but are honorariums from couples and families at an amount determined by church policy.

The Organist shall have permission to conduct private organ/piano lessons and to make the organ available to qualified students.
Attend job-related meetings as needed.

Knowledge and Skills Required

Organ and piano skills necessary for accompanying choral groups, soloists, instrumental ensembles/handbells, congregational singing, as well as providing worship service music.

Sight‑read hymns and octavo music, including open‑score playing; ability to play in a variety of styles.

Knowledge of United Methodist worship tradition and a theological understanding of the church sufficient to select and provide service music appropriate to the liturgical calendar, in consultation with the Director of Music and Senior Pastor as needed.

Supervision, Evaluation and Terms of Appointment

Supervised by Director of Music
Evaluated at 90 days, then annually thereafter, by the Director of Music and the Staff Parish Relations Committee
