Summer Academy Healthy Foods Coordinator

Student U is a community organization that uses the power of education, advocacy, and leadership to build a just and equitable Durham. To break the cycle of poverty and help shape a new future for our city, we empower and equip first‑generation college students in Durham Public Schools, their families, and educators to become the leaders that will transform our city for the better.

Student U seeks a caring, competent, and highly motivated individual to work as the Healthy Food Coordinator during our Summer Academy. The Healthy Food Coordinator position is for persons interested in providing healthy food and promotion to middle and high school students. The Healthy Food Coordinator will oversee Student U’s healthy food initiative. The right candidate will be able to provide Student U students with knowledge and fun and reliable food service during the summer.

This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Operations, Karla Fernández.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary contact with Lunch Vendors and DPS Food + Nutrition.
  • Manage + Support with the Summer Food Service Program grant and all documentation.
  • Which includes:
  • Receiving Tickets for meals.
  • Tally meals served.
  • Ensure that all students receive a complete meal.
  • Discard any leftover meals.
  • Coordinate, set up, and clean up daily for breakfast, snack, and lunch for ~250 students.
  • Track expenses and invoices in the healthy food budget every week.
  • Maintain communication with lunch vendors regarding food selections every week.
  • Ensure that field trips have snacks and/or bag lunches before departure.
  • Survey students on meal choices.
  • Assist in other areas of the Healthy Food Initiative or with the Operations Team as needed.
  • Collaborate with student interns to develop engaging nutrition campaigns, including creating eye‑catching posters and facts tailored for middle and high school audiences, while also managing food options to ensure students genuinely enjoy their meals; foster a fun, organized, and inviting lunch environment that promotes healthy eating habits.

Compensation: $18 hourly rate

Commitment: Work weeks will include five full‑time weeks of 35 hours per week (7:00 am - 2:00 pm) , not including Holidays. Some training/orientation will occur in March (25), April (24-25), and June (15-26). These hours will also be compensated.
