Positional SummaryThe Assistant Director, Student Engagement (AD) is an integral part of the Jewish Life at Duke (JLD) team, helping the organization empower students to learn, grow intellectually and spiritually, nurture personal paths to Jewish identity, and cultivate community and friendship. The AD engages in JLD’s one-on‑one engagement strategy, applies Hillel International best practices and student‑engagement data to improve outreach, plans and executes programming, coaches students, leads marketing and communications, and strengthens support for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
KeyPosition Duties Student Engagement & Programming – 50% of Effort
- Meet one‑on‑one with undergraduate and graduate/professional students about their Jewish journeys and engagement at Duke (75% undergraduate, 25% graduate).
- Coach the JLD Springboard Fellow with logistics of large‑scale, student‑collaborative programming such as the Jewish First‑Year Advisory Mentorship (JFAM) and B’nai Mitzvah, including budget management.
- Serve as staff advisor to Jewish Service Club and Jewtinos.
- Liaise with graduate student groups (Jewish Business Association, Jewish Law Student Association, Jewish Medical Student Association), assess their needs, and administer JLD funding support.
- Develop leadership initiatives for leaders of JLD‑affiliated student groups and collaborate with other JLD staff advisors.
- Supervise JLD student interns, including hiring, training, mentorship, project assignments, and evaluation.
- Develop collaborative programming with other identity and cultural centers, building relationships by meeting regularly with their ADs.
- Meet regularly with the student leaders of the Jewish Business Association and Jewish Law Student Association.
- Assist with and attend key ritual/holiday events (Shabbat services, Friday night dinners, High Holidays, Passover), handling set‑up, sign‑in, and logistics.
- Lead JLD’s implementation of Hillel International student‑engagement best practices, educating team members and student leaders.
- Act as the JLD student‑engagement database super‑user, ensuring data integrity, running reports, and coaching staff and student users.
- Use engagement data to inform weekly outreach strategy and objectives.
- Collaborate with the Campus Rabbi to develop goals and evaluative measures for student outreach.
- Contribute to the annual assessment report in collaboration with the Director.
- Oversee weekly student email newsletters, texting program, and social media calendar; guide interns in content creation.
- Coordinate with other identity and cultural centers to ensure mutual inclusion of JLD content.
- Oversight of annual welcome efforts to first‑year students.
- Communicate with incoming students and families, providing tours of the Freeman Center for Jewish Life and meeting prospective students and families.
- Serve as JLD digital communicator and web editor, maintaining the JLD website and collaborating with student affairs and Duke communicators.
Duties & Responsibilities – 10% of Effort
- Mentor the Springboard Fellow and Israel Fellow.
- Perform related duties as assigned to meet departmental, division, and university goals.
- Represent Jewish Life at Duke at departmental, division, university, and Hillel meetings, committees, and programs.

Anticipated Pay RangeUSD $47,940.00 – $75,990.00, based on experience, education, and internal equity.
