Positional Summary

The Assistant Director for Training & Student Development
, in collaboration with the Director, Assistant Director for Programming and Student Engagement, and Staff Specialist, supports the CSGD’s mission to foster an inclusive campus climate through education, advocacy, support, mentoring, and community engagement. This role designs, implements, and facilitates educational trainings, workshops, and lectures for the Duke community, while co‑supervising undergraduate and graduate student staff. The Assistant Director also serves as a liaison to graduate and professional LGBTQIA+ student organizations and leads professional development for CSGD student programming assistants.

Responsibilities include overseeing training development and facilitation, conducting departmental assessments related to training and student staff development, and — along‑side the Assistant Director for Programming and Student Engagement — managing CSGD operations in the Director’s absence. The role also cultivates civic engagement and philanthropy across the University and local Durham community.

Key Position Duties Training and Facilitation (30%)
  • Design, implement, facilitate, and market educational trainings, workshops, and lectures of the CSGD.
  • Evaluate and assess trainings of the CSGD through regular quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis in collaboration with the Student Affairs Office of Assessment.
Supervision (30%)
  • Supervise the CSGD Graduate and Professional Assistants and Undergraduate Student Programming Assistants.
  • Coordinate the co‑supervision model of all undergraduate Student Programming Assistants and Graduate Student Assistants.
  • Assist with recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of Student Programming Assistants and Graduate Student Assistants.
  • Facilitate the professional development of Student Programming Assistants and Graduate Student Assistants.
Student Support and Mentoring (10%)
  • Support CSGD in‑group spaces and mentor student‑led programs and initiatives.
  • Serve as an advisor to Undergraduate student groups Blue Devils United and Athlete Ally.
Budget and Annual Reporting (5%)
  • Work with the Director to oversee the budget and participate in budget planning and development especially as it pertains to student staff, training budgets, and assessment efforts.
  • Assist the Director in the writing of annual reports and accreditation reports.
Grad and Professional Student Support (5%)
  • Serve as a liaison to graduate and professional LGBTQIA+ student organizations.
  • Assist with the coordination of their training efforts for Graduate and Professional Schools.
  • Encourage involvement in a leadership roundtable convened by the CSGD semesterly in conjunction with the Graduate Assistants.
Resource Library (5%)
  • Manage the CSGD Book and DVD Resource Library.
External Relations (5%)
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with other identity and cultural centers within the Division of Student Affairs, identity and cultural student organizations, alumni organizations and organizations that support the mission of the CSGD within the Duke University community and beyond.
Daily Operations (5%)
  • Manage the Center’s daily operations and oversee programming and administrative tasks in the Director’s absence.
Faculty and Staff Engagement (2.5%)
  • Plan and market faculty and staff socials for each semester.
  • Coordinate with Faculty/Staff LGBTQIA+ affinity groups.
Website (2.5%)
  • Update and maintain the CSGD website.
