Primary Purpose of Position

The ideal candidate will serve as a senior faculty member with expectations of teaching, research, and service. A senior candidate with experience in the management of academic units will additionally be considered for the position of department chair. In collaboration with the faculty, the chair will establish the overall vision for the department in regard to teaching, research, and the general development of students, faculty, and staff.

The chair serves as mentor to faculty colleagues, shapes the department by managing and evaluating faculty and staff, collaborates with other college administrative officers, interprets college policy, advocates for the department from a perspective of the best overall interests of the College, leads faculty in important processes that shape the curriculum and the learning of students, and effectively articulates department and college missions to internal and external constituencies.

Additional responsibilities include managing departmental meetings and committees, keeping department members informed, seeking student feedback, and providing leadership for systematic review of assessment and program reviews.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Minimum Education /Experience

• PhD in Biological Sciences or a closely related discipline.

• Established record of effective teaching, research, and professional accomplishments consistent with the rank of full professor with tenure.

• Current and ongoing productive and funded research agenda commensurate with a senior departmental faculty member.

• For those considered for the chair: demonstrated record of leadership experience in teaching, research, service, curriculum development, program review and assessment, student and faculty administration, securing extramural funding and grantsmanship, and fiscal management.
