Primary Function of Organizational UnitThe Counseling Center is a department within the Division of Student Affairs at North Carolina Central University. Its primary mission is to support the academic and student development missions of the university by providing a comprehensive program of services that assist in the cultural, social, moral, personal, emotional, and intellectual development of a diverse student population. The Center strives to create a warm, open, and supportive atmosphere where all students feel welcomed and appreciated regardless of background.
PrimaryPurpose of Position
The position provides individual and group counseling for a variety of personal, social, educational, and vocational concerns; offers psycho educational workshops; conducts client assessment for decision‑making and problem‑solving; develops and presents outreach programs; provides crisis intervention and management, including on‑call rotation; provides student advocacy.touchimonials; consults with faculty and staff on student issues; serves on committees; supervises graduate practicum students and interns; engages in professional development;
and performs related duties as assigned.
- Advanced experience and knowledge of individual and group counseling methods and procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge of principles of program development, consultation, outreach, and crisis intervention and management.
- Personal attributes that facilitate effective interpersonal relations and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of students, student organizations, faculty, staff, administrators, and parents.
- Knowledge of developmental characteristics of late adolescence and young adulthood and the unique difficulties confronting individuals in these stages of life.
- Established commitment to multicultural competencies.
- Experience with group counseling and gender/sexuality issues and programming.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form; strong interpersonal skills required.
Master's degree required (doctorate preferred) in counseling or clinical psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field from an accredited college or university, and completed clinical training in practicum and internship with appropriate classes in theories of personality, abnormal psychology, human development, crisis counseling, and alcohol and substance use (preferred). Experience in case management, familiarity counseling students of diverse backgrounds, and ability to interact with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
Licensesor Certification required by Statute or Regulation
Fully licensed or eligible for full licensure in the State of North Carolina upon date of hire if transferring an unencumbered license from another state.
Consideration for sport psychology/counseling and performance consultation with clinical experience if not fully licensed.
