Student Counselor

Position Number 717437 | FLSA Exempt | Permanent – Full Time | 1 FTE (40 hours/week, 12 months) | Salary Range $60,000

Position Overview

At North Carolina Central University (NCCU), you will support a diverse student population by providing individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and psycho educational workshops. Your role will help students navigate personal, social, and academic challenges to achieve their full potential.

Primary Purpose of Position

Provide comprehensive counseling services that promote the academic and social development of students. Responsible for the delivery of individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, community outreach, consultation, and supervision of graduate students and interns.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Advanced knowledge of individual and group counseling methods and procedures.
  • Deep understanding of program development, consultation, outreach, and crisis intervention.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Knowledge of developmental characteristics of late adolescence and young adulthood, and experience with multicultural competency issues, including gender and sexuality.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Minimum Education /Experience

Master’s degree required (Doctorate preferred) in counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or a related field; completed clinical training in practicum and internship with coursework in personality theories, abnormal psychology, human development, crisis counseling, and substance use. Experience in case management and counseling to a diverse student population is required.

Licenses or Certification

Fully licensed or eligible for full licensure in North Carolina at the time of hire. Consideration for sport psychology/counseling and performance consultation is acceptable if not fully licensed.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
  • Provide individual and group counseling for a wide range of personal, social, emotional, educational, and vocational concerns.
  • Offer psycho educational workshops and presentations on topics such as study skills, assertiveness training, and stress management.
  • Provide crisis intervention and management, including on-call rotation and emergency support for campus crises.
  • Provide consultations to faculty, staff, and external stakeholders on student issues.
  • Advocate for students by facilitating referrals to community agencies and university services.
  • Fulfill administrative duties, serve on counseling center, division, or university committees, and provide updates during staff meetings.
  • Supervise and train master’s level graduate practicum students and interns in counseling, program development, and crisis management.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and stay current with trends in college student mental health.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
