Job Description

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Architect positioned at our Durham, NC office. This role provides high‑level technical assistance and guidance for multi‑site, multi‑phase projects that include due diligence, planning, concept development, restoration, alteration, extension, and the implementation of creative, functional, and sustainable building designs. The Lead Architect will develop drawings, specifications, budgets, and construction documents, present design proposals, and manage client relationships.

Responsibilities also include preparing reports and documentation on materials, installations, feasibility, and construction technology specifications, ensuring all deliverables meet or exceed industry standards for design, safety, structural integrity, and occupancy. The position reports to the Mid‑Atlantic South Transportation and Infrastructure Business Line.

Your Impact
  • Prepare detailed drawings for complex, large‑scale projects, illustrating both external and internal appearance and structure.
  • Guide data collection, analysis, and synthesis from site visits, surveys, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, environmental data, and historical records.
  • Conduct professional architectural work, research, and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions to ensure compliance with applicable rules, standards, and permitting requirements.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, timelines, and cost estimates; coordinate updates with owners, other disciplines, sub‑consultants, and clients.
  • Lead design, development, construction, and restoration initiatives from inception to completion, ensuring durability, structural soundness, and functionality.
  • Incorporate advanced technologies and emerging design techniques to deliver innovative, future‑ready solutions.
  • Oversee and manage cross‑functional teams of engineers, architects, planners, and scientific professionals, managing budgets, schedules, and technical calculations.
  • Review and approve building and infrastructure design plans, ensuring code and regulatory compliance.
  • Create technical reports, presentations, and visualizations—including tables, charts, renderings, cross‑sections, and 2D/3D illustrations—to communicate findings and recommendations.
  • Analyze and interpret data from site investigations to develop action plans for risk mitigation.
  • Interact confidently with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a professional manner.
  • Collaborate on federally, state, regional, and local projects and business development opportunities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of architectural techniques, practices, and emerging trends.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture or a closely related discipline.
  • 7–10 years of post‑education experience in the discipline.
  • 3–5 years of experience in commuter rail, bus, aviation, or highway transportation architecture.
  • Essential professional licensure/certification.
  • Strong proficiency in architectural principles, practices, and project application.
  • Experience in building planning, drawing standards, design, and construction management for restorative and new projects.
  • Excellent creative, visualization, and technical drawing skills.
  • Knowledge of sustainability concepts and green building design.
  • Deep understanding of building and construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
  • Ability to perform technical computations and calculations with architectural principles.
  • Ability to conduct inspections and investigations of building construction and design.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • High self‑leadership, detail orientation, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
  • Independent work capability with minimal oversight; ability to lead junior team members.
