GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this job is to perform responsible professional work identifying incarcerated individuals that are eligible for pre-trial release services and supervising released defendants; performs related work as required. This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages a caseload that is comprised of weekly office visits from defendants concerning court date reminders;
- Monitors client compliance while assigned to electronic monitoring devices;
- Prepares comprehensive criminal history reports for each defendant scheduled for first appearance;
- Creates an offender assessment report for each defendant scheduled for first appearance and for all referred cases;
- Interviews jail detainees to obtain information for release eligibility;
- Conducts local and national criminal records checks to ensure all outstanding warrants are served;
- Ensures that clients have adequate living conditions;
- Screens clients for referral to other services provided by Justice Services Department and its partners;
- Counsels clients on the importance of being present for all court dates;
- Contacts persons who may be willing to assist clients with making their bonds;
- Communicates information to judges, public defenders, and other court staff regarding client’s status in the community;
- Enters required case information into the computer system to document defendant progress and compliance;
- Conducts urine screenings, home visits, and other follow-up such as school attendance or other special compliance as needed;
- Works on rotational coverage of electronic monitoring on-call after hours;
- Performs related work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:
- Knowledge of criminal justice system, criminal statutes, court etiquette, and jail procedures;
- Knowledge of the various systems that hold criminal record information;
- Skilled in obtaining information quickly and reviewing files for pertinent information;
- Skilled in interviewing effectively using investigative and motivational interviewing techniques;
- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals;
- Ability to work independently;
- Ability to work in an adverse environment;
- Ability to form relationships and build trust.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a human services field and six months of social work and/or case management experience in a public agency or school which provides experience in the techniques of casework, group work or community organization.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Ability to obtain Certified Pretrial Services Professional status through the National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies within one year of hire.
