Position: DEPUTY SHERIFF LATERAL

Deputy Sheriff – BLET Certified

Durham County Government invites applications for the Deputy Sheriff – BLET Certified position.

  • Minimum Hiring Salary: $55,500.00 plus incentives

Responsibilities
  • On an assigned shift, operates a patrol car to observe violations of laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order.
  • Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints.
  • Serves warrants, summons, subpoenas, capiases, court orders, notices, attachments, claims and deliveries, ejections, executions, and other legal papers, makes arrests.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Assists in domestic disputes.
  • Directs traffic for funerals and other public gatherings.
  • Assists other law enforcement officers in investigations.
  • Serves as court bailiff and prisoner guard.
  • Reports unsafe conditions existing in the street or other public facilities.
  • Assists with criminal investigations by presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, prepares property and evidence, recording and issuing of evidence in court cases.
  • Transport prisoners, mental patients and others as required.
  • Performs Bailiff and court security duties as assigned.
  • Prepares detailed reports.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures.
  • General knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings.
  • Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Department.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public.
  • Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
  • Ability to develop skills in the use of firearms and the operation of motor vehicles.
  • Ability to maintain physical agility and endurance.
Requirements
  • Most have a current NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Certification.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
Special Requirements

Must be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts, which includes holidays and weekends.
