About Duke Life FlightDuke Life Flight is Duke Health’s critical care and emergency air and ground transport team, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems. The team includes paramedics, nurses, respiratory therapists, emergency medical technicians, and communications specialists who work quickly to provide compassionate care and transport services to critically ill patients of all ages. Duke Life Flight also maintains a Code Blue Response Team and supports event‑medicine needs.

The Life Flight team supports over 20 critical‑care procedures independently. The patient population ranges from 22‑23‑week gestation neonates to geriatric patients. In this department you work with interdisciplinary teams including Basic Life Support EMTs, single‑provider ALS Paramedics, Clinical Nurses, Respiratory Therapists (Neo/Peds team), and Critical Care Paramedics.

The Paramedic II functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, providing direct patient care. The Paramedic performs a variety of activities across various practice settings and patient populations in accordance with the Paramedic scope of practice as defined by the North Carolina Medical Board and with the approval of the practicing Medical Director.
Duties and Responsibilities of Paramedic II (Life Flight Advanced Life Support Paramedic)- Provide direct patient care in accordance with the North Carolina Medical Board scope of practice under medical oversight.
- Assist clinical staff in evaluation, treatment, and care of patients. Obtain pertinent history and perform a physical examination. Perform technical procedures as delegated.
- Monitor patients and maintain records using patient monitoring systems and electronic health records. Document patients’ status, delivery of care, and response to care per protocol.
- Maintain an accurate medical record to initiate charges for each patient treated.
- Communicate essential information to all appropriate members of the healthcare team to promote information sharing.
- Operate equipment in the hospital and transport environment. Ensure equipment functions; restock supplies as needed.
- Provide and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Dispose of sharps, soiled materials, and linens per policy and use PPE as required.
- Act as preceptor and support the development of other staff and learners.
- Participate in identifying clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and activities.
- Maintain certifications and clinical skills.
- Complete vehicle inspection, documentation, and road test of assigned ambulance(s).
- Perform minor unit repairs (light bulbs, fluid replenishment, tightening nuts, inspecting tires, etc.) and daily maintenance (fueling, cleaning).
- Assist with patient care as requested (loading/unloading, equipment operation, providing directions to Duke).
- Provide direct patient care on ALS I, ALS II, or BLS transports within scope and document in the electronic medical record.
- Replenish oxygen and other medical supplies used during transport.
- Demonstrate safe driving skills and use technology to complete missions safely.
- Assist with continuing education outreach programs and public‑relations events as assigned.
- Provide staffing coverage to all bases as needed; assist units within Duke University Hospital when necessary.
High School Diploma required. Associates degree preferred.
ExperienceOne year ALS Paramedic experience required; preferred two to three years of pre‑hospital experience with a moderate call volume (>15,000 calls/year) at a 911 agency.
