Department ProfileDuke Primary Care in Apex offers comprehensive family medicine and lab services. Care includes internal and family medicine, annual physicals, preventive care, sick visits, immunizations, chronic illness management, women’s health, and diagnostic tests such as lab work and X‑rays for adults. Pediatric services include well‑child visits, routine checkups, immunizations, and management of asthma, allergies, and diabetes.
Clinic Location & HoursOpen 8 am – 5 pm, Monday to Friday.
Job SummaryThe Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is a vital member of the interdisciplinary health‑care team, providing direct patient care and administrative support to keep clinic operations running smoothly.
Administrative Duties- Answer telephones and greet patients
- Update, file, and manage patient medical records
- Complete insurance forms and handle correspondence
- Schedule appointments and coordinate hospital admissions
- Arrange laboratory services
- Manage billing and bookkeeping
- Assist medical and nursing staff with exam and treatment tasks
- Take medical histories and record vital signs
- Explain treatment procedures to patients
- Prepare patients for examinations, procedures, and X‑rays
- Assist physician during examinations and procedures
- Collect, prepare, and process laboratory specimens; perform basic lab tests on premises
- Sterilize instruments, dispose of contaminated supplies, and change dressings
- Administer medications, authorise drug refills, and telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy
- Draw blood, perform electrocardiograms, and remove sutures or staples
- Level I – Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred; high‑school or GED required.
- Level II – Graduation from a program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES preferred; high‑school or GED required.
- Level III – Same as Level II; high‑school or GED required.
Level I:
No experience required.
Level II:
Minimum 1 year clinical experience as a medical assistant.
Level III:
Minimum 3 years clinical experience as a medical assistant. (1 year of experience is provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting.)
- Level I – Certified by AAMA, AMT, NHA‑CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA; BLS required.
- Level II – Same as Level I; BLS required.
- Level III – Same as Level I; BLS required.
- Excellent customer‑service skills
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions from medical‑assistant training
- Capability to lift and transport patients and, as needed, perform heavy lifting of stretchers or wheelchairs
- Knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures applicable to clinic work
- Knowledge of infection‑control, sanitation, and personal‑hygiene protocols
- Typing skills and medical terminology proficiency
- Ability to establish effective relationships with patients and clinic staff
- For Levels II and III:
Ability to seek resources independently and work collaboratively
