PRMO (Patient Revenue Management Organization) is a fully integrated, centralized revenue cycle organization supporting all of Duke Health. The Medical Records Coder II is a certified coder who coordinates and reviews the work of subordinate employees, assists with training, and ensures accurate coding of inpatient medical records using ICD‑10‑CM, ICD‑10‑PCS, and CPT‑4 conventions.
Duties and Responsibilities- Review complex medical records and accurately code the primary/secondary diagnoses and procedures using ICD‑10‑CM, ICD‑10‑PCS, and/or CPT coding conventions.
- Coordinate and review the work of designated employees, ensuring quality and quantity of work through regular audits.
- Assist with research, development, and presentation of continuing education programs on areas of specialization.
- Sequence diagnoses and procedures using coding guidelines, ensuring DRG/APC assignment is accurate.
- Abstract and compile data from medical records for optimal reimbursement for hospital and/or professional charges.
- Consult with and educate physicians on coding practices and conventions to provide detailed coding information.
- Communicate with nursing and ancillary services personnel for needed documentation for accurate coding.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and surgical techniques through continued education.
- Maintain knowledge of medical record practices, standards, regulations, JCAHO, HCFA, and other relevant agencies.
- Assist with special projects as required.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- High school diploma required.
- Certification: RHIA or RHIT – no experience required; CCS – 2 years of coding experience required; CPC or HCS‑D – years of coding experience required.
- Must hold one of the following active/current certifications: RHIA Hospital Coding, RHIT Hospital, Coding Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Hospital Coding, Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Homecare Coding Specialist‑Diagnosis (HCS‑D) Homecare Coding.
