School of Medicine Established in 1930, Duke University School of Medicine is the youngest of the nation's top medical schools. Ranked sixth among medical schools in the nation, the School takes pride in being an inclusive community of outstanding learners, investigators, clinicians, and staff where interdisciplinary collaboration is embraced and great ideas accelerate translation of fundamental scientific discoveries to improve human health locally and around the globe.
Composed of more than 2,500 faculty physicians and researchers, more than 1,300 students, and more than 6,000 staff, the Duke University School of Medicine along with the Duke University School of Nursing, Duke University Health System and the Private Diagnostic Clinic (PDC) comprise Duke Health, a world‑class academic medical center. The Health System encompasses Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Primary Care, Duke Home and Hospice, Duke Health and Wellness, and multiple affiliations.
Be Bold
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Duke University is seeking a motivated research technician to assist in our efforts to understand fundamental mechanisms driving the development and progression of cancer, ultimately aiming to find better treatments for patients with cancer. This position is intended to provide experimental support by working in the laboratory of physician scientist Dr. Christine Eyler ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).).
Research focuses on the following broad topics of cell and cancer biology: (1) probing mechanisms of treatment resistance and radiation response, (2) designing and conducting genetic and pharmacologic screens to identify novel cancer therapeutic strategies in cellular and/or organoid model systems, (3) implementation of advanced functional genomics techniques and 3D chromatin profiling to determine the spatial and functional requirements of enhancers, and (4) tissue processing and molecular analysis of patient‑derived clinical samples.
The Eyler laboratory possesses a rich environment including numerous research technicians, and students, and with numerous close collaborators.
Competitive applicants will have received an undergraduate degree by the start of employment, will have prior experience in lab research, will be intellectually passionate and able to display scientific initiative. Candidates will gain the most from the experience if they are able to stay for more than 1 year of time, ideally 2 years or more.
Be You.
Duties may include some or all of the following:
- Maintain an organized and complete lab notebook of experiments that are performed.
- Propagate cells in cell culture and perform in vitro viability assays and clonogenic assays.
- Use human‑derived specimens to establish and maintain cancer organoid culture models.
- Perform PCR, RT‑PCR and Western blots to characterize cell lines, tumor tissues, and mouse tissues.
- Learn and implement advanced techniques like high throughput microscopy, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry.
- Learn and implement techniques for next generation sequencing library preparation, including analysis for motivated/interested candidates.
- Though much of the work is conducted in cell culture lines, some experiments will involve use of mouse models. Ideal candidates will be comfortable with learning these techniques.
- Participate in a regular “call” schedule for retrieval, processing, and analysis of patient‑derived clinical samples on a prospective clinical trial.
- Meet or communicate by e‑mail with your supervisor on a regular basis to plan experiments, troubleshoot problems, and discuss results.
- Participate in regular lab meetings to discuss results or articles in the literature.
- Assist in recruiting new lab members by informing them about the lab and your research.
- Help maintain reagents or equipment in the laboratory with specific jobs (which might include tasks like making cell dissociation buffer, 70% ethanol, etc.).
- Help provide a collegial environment for the laboratory.
- Set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate standard laboratory equipment required for specific tests.
- Participate in laboratory logistical…
