General Description of the Job ClassThe Clinical Informaticist implements, evaluates, and supports technology solutions for patient care, primarily the Maestro Care (Epic) electronic health record and other clinical information systems. This role serves as a primary resource for clinical users, troubleshooting issues, coaching on system use, and liaising between frontline staff and technical teams. The incumbent collaborates closely with clinicians, operational management, informaticists, and Duke Health Technology Solutions applications staff.
They serve as a Maestro Care EHR application expert for core workflows at Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital (DLNH) and support enterprise go‑lives at other facilities. Reports to the Chief Nursing Information Officer (CNIO).
Level 1
- Maintain Epic certification and/or proficiency, including self‑directed learning and competency exams.
- Provide after‑hours and business support for clinical system issues; troubleshoot and coach users.
- Guide users through incident reporting and service request processes.
- Monitor user feedback to identify recurring issues and escalation.
- Lead design sessions to determine best‑fit solutions and recommend process improvements.
- Participate in data collection and analysis to assess effectiveness of system changes.
- Implement change management plans and keep stakeholders informed.
- Plan and provide customer updates to Super‑User groups.
- Collaborate with educators on clinical workflows and training needs.
- Implement tools and processes that assist end users with data management.
- Design solutions aligned with regulatory and accreditation standards, security protocols, and privacy concerns.
- Participate in Nova Note review for Maestro Care releases and determine impact to clinicians.
- Serve on committees and task forces related to clinical information systems.
- Make oral and written presentations to project teams and management.
- Update user, operational, and department documentation, including downtime procedures.
- Coordinate operational projects with supervision.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Level 2 – In addition to Level 1 duties:
- Perform in‑depth analysis of user department workflows, data collection, and report specification details.
- Provide detailed specifications for automated functions.
- Develop and implement change management plans.
- Chair committees and task forces related to clinical information systems.
- Coordinate and operationalize projects with direction.
- Develop, evaluate, and document user and departmental downtime procedures.
- Lead process improvement initiatives in targeted areas.
- Ensure change requests follow the appropriate approval process.
Level 3 – In addition to Level 1 and 2 duties:
- Mentor others in workflow analysis, specification development, and solution design.
- Apply best practices and evidence‑based practice to clinical information systems.
- Serve as chair or co‑chair of key governance groups or SHGs.
- Make oral and written presentations to senior leadership.
- Direct and coordinate complex projects with minimal guidance.
- Identify and implement process, workflow, and procedural improvements.
- Collect and analyze data before and after system changes.
- Precept informatics nurses and graduate students in informatics, serving as a professional role model.
Education (All Levels)
Bachelor’s degree in a related clinical or technical field, or four years of equivalent experience. Master’s in health informatics is preferred.
