Position NumberGeneral DescriptionThe Elections Systems Specialist is primarily responsible for the maintenance and support of Board of Elections equipment and technology.
This position reports to the Election Services Manager and works under regular supervision.
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities- Performs professional and technical activities to meet the business needs of the Election department;
- Programs, test and/or repairs equipment or software;
- Monitors equipment, maintains software and hardware products at current release levels, and performs related tuning activities;
- Troubleshoots hardware and software problems;
- Assist with logistical tasks related to setup and breakdown of Election Day and Early Voting locations;
- Ensures superior security standards for the Durham County Board of Elections by working with the State Board of Elections, Durham County Information and Systems Technology (IS&T) department and federal partners;
- Develops documents and manuals detailing technology management/security policies for the Board of Elections;
- Works with vendors in researching and recommending new products and troubleshooting software problems or questions;
- Maintains Durham County Board of Elections databases and manages information systems;
- Programs and performs logic and accuracy testing on Board of Elections equipment;
- Ensures the proper creation and distribution of electronic poll book systems;
- Performs related tasks as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of information systems and networking;
- Thorough knowledge of system security principles;
- Knowledge of Microsoft office applications and strong technical aptitude;
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail;
- Ability to troubleshoot hardware, software and networking;
- Knowledge of the State Election Information Management System (SEIMS) rules and procedures.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in computer science, information systems support, business technology or related field and a minimum of three years of experience in information systems support in the area of elections administration or with a similar government organization.
Special Requirements- Must complete precinct worker and chief judge training within one year of employment.
- Must enroll in and pass all courses required to earn North Carolina certification as a Certified Elections Administrator within four years of employment.
- Must be physically able to lift supplies up to forty pounds.
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License and driving record.
