The Assistant Director of Housing will support and advance Duke’s housing initiatives in Durham by evaluating current housing strategy, providing research informed recommendations to the Senior Director to advance institutional and partnership investments and manage programs that address affordable housing as a social driver of health. For over twenty years, Duke has collaborated to address housing in Durham by contributing tens of millions of dollars in partnership with an array of diverse stakeholders to support the development of over one-thousand affordable housing units.

The selected candidate must bring a strong background in housing strategy demonstrating the ability to adapt program implementation to an evolving landscape. Leveraging this foundation, they will demonstrate the ability to forecast levers of partnership opportunities that support both housing affordability in Durham and create opportunities for Duke’s workforce. The Assistant Director will be a capable communicator, highly organized, and demonstrate cultural competency working with local partners, community members, and Duke employees.

They will lead Duke’s employee home buyers club and support the Senior Director of Community Development by managing aspects of Duke’s Affordable Housing Council. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in housing-related fields including affordable housing development, workforce housing, or housing policy.


* This position is designated as an abbreviated schedule of 32 hours per week, which equates to a 0.8 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE). Positions with abbreviated schedules (more than 20 but less than 40 hours per week) are eligible for most benefits on a pro rata basis, consistent with Duke policy.*

What You’ll Do:
  • Program Evaluation & Strategy (30%) Assess the effectiveness of Duke’s housing initiatives using qualitative and quantitative methods. Identify trends, recommend improvements, and implement changes to maximize impact.
  • Research & Policy (25%) Monitor housing policies at all levels and deliver data-driven recommendations to guide institutional strategies. Translate complex housing data into actionable insights through reports, briefs, and presentations.
  • Program Management (20%) Lead Duke’s Home buyers Club and manage aspects of the Affordable Housing Council, including event coordination, proposal processes, and administrative reporting.
  • Operations & Fundraising (15%) Oversee budgets, operations, and compliance. Supervise contractors and interns, and advise on fundraising strategies aligned with housing goals.
  • Collaboration (10%) Work across teams to align housing initiatives with Duke’s Strategic Community Impact Plan. Support coalition‑building efforts to address housing-related social determinants of health.
Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $59,829.00 to USD $86,700.00. Duke University considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate’s work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree required
Experience:
  • Minimum of three years of progressive responsibility in advanced project coordination related to affordable housing, city planning, public policy and other related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in housing strategy, program evaluation, service design and improvement.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to synthesize data, research findings and policy information into practical recommendations for program improvement and stakeholder engagement.
  • Preference for a familiarity with the Triangle area housing landscape.
