Department Profile

The Children's Health Center and Lenox Baker Children's Hospital at Duke University Hospital are home to a comprehensive network of pediatric outpatient clinics. Our teams deliver exemplary, patient-centered care to ensure an exceptional experience for every child and family.

The Metabolic and Genetics Team at Duke Children's provides specialized care to patients with a wide range of genetic and metabolic conditions. We are committed to compassionate service, clinical excellence, and seamless patient support.

Position Summary

The Genetics Nurse Navigator provides telephone triage, patient education, and care coordination for children with metabolic and genetic disorders. This role partners closely with the faculty directors of Pediatric Metabolic and Genetics and supports patients both inside and outside the clinic setting. The environment is collaborative, fast-paced, and highly supportive, with opportunities for independent practice and teamwork.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications
  • Strong background in pediatric nursing
  • Experience in telephone triage, care coordination, or managed care
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong technology navigation, including EPIC (preferred)
  • Demonstrated organizational abilities and attention to detail
  • Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, clinical staff, physicians, administrators, and leadership
Work Performed
  • Provide clinic support and coordination as needed during patient sessions
  • Perform patient care coordination from an office setting on non-clinic days
  • Support a patient population with a range of genetic and metabolic disorders, including Down syndrome, 22q deletion syndrome, glycogen storage diseases, lysosomal storage diseases, and mitochondrial/metabolic disorders
  • Conduct telephone triage, resolve issues within scope, gather pertinent information, collaborate with providers on care plans, and relay plans to patients and families
  • Document all communication in Maestro Care and manage in-basket messages
  • Coordinate patient care needs including infusion management, medication refills, lab and study orders, and various appointments
  • Facilitate new patient scheduling, ensuring all required medical records, imaging, and labs are obtained from outside facilities
  • Coordinate diagnostic testing and outpatient referrals within Duke and at external facilities
Work Hours and Schedule

Full-time (Hybrid). Typical schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Role requires on-site presence 4-5 times per month and full on-site availability during the first 30 days for orientation.
