Position: Postdoctoral Associate in the Varghese Lab

Overview

The School of Medicine at Duke University, established in 1930, is the youngest among the nation’s top medical schools. It comprises more than 2,600 faculty physicians and researchers, nearly 2,000 students, and more than 6,200 staff. Duke Health includes Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, and related clinical and research affiliations.

The postdoctoral positions study skeletal muscle biology and function in regulating other tissues, using cellular, molecular, and model animal (transgenic mice) approaches. The postdoctoral researcher will design and implement experiments, collect and analyze data, and summarize the study in presentations and manuscripts.

Definition

The Postdoctoral Appointee holds a PhD or equivalent doctorate (e.g., ScD, MD, DVM). Candidates with non-US degrees may be required to provide proof of degree equivalency.

  • A candidate may be appointed to a postdoctoral position if degree requirements are completed but the degree has not yet been formally conferred; evidence of completion and a statement of the anticipated confer date may be provided. If the degree is not conferred by the projected date, the appointment may be terminated.
  • International candidates: immigration classifications (e.g., H-1B, J-1) require that the degree be conferred before petitioning or visa documentation can be issued.
  • The term of the appointment is limited (see Section 5 of the Postdoc Policy).
  • The appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship and may include teaching responsibilities.
  • The appointment is generally preparatory for a full-time academic or research career.
  • The appointment is not part of a clinical training program unless research training under a senior mentor is the primary purpose.
  • The Postdoctoral Appointee works under the supervision of a mentor or department at Duke University.
  • The Postdoctoral Appointee is expected to publish results during the appointment period.
Expectations
  • Conscientious discharge of research or scholarship responsibilities, which may include teaching duties for Postdoctoral Associates
  • Conformance to standards of responsible conduct in research
  • Compliance with good scholarly and research practices
  • Maintenance of a laboratory notebook or equivalent records of research activity, which remains the property of Duke University upon termination
  • Adherence to University standards regarding the use of isotopes, chemicals, infectious agents, animals, human subjects, etc.
  • Open and timely discussion with the mentor regarding all facets of research activities; consult the AAMC Compact Between Postdoctoral Appointees and Their Mentors for guidelines
  • Prompt disclosure to the mentor regarding possession and distribution of materials, reagents, software, copyrightable and potentially patentable discoveries
  • Collegial conduct toward members of the research group and others as described in the Duke University School of Medicine Honor Code and related policies
  • Compliance with all applicable University and departmental policies
