We have vacancies for Maintenance Assistants within the Water & Sewer Maintenance Division. Successful candidates must be able to operate or learn to operate the required tools and equipment. We seek motivated team players who take pride in their work and wish to advance their careers. All employees may be required to perform alternate duties during emergencies and participate in scheduled Stand-by/Recall rotations.
This role involves working in various weather conditions.
Cross-training opportunities include:
- Collection Systems: Assisting with CCTV inspections, flush truck operations, and sewer overflow responses.
- Meter Services: Installing and repairing water meters, fixing leaks, replacing meter boxes and setters, testing large meters, and pressure checks.
Excavations: Manual labor as part of a trenching/heavy equipment crew for underground water and wastewater system repairs.
Distribution Systems: Repairing and maintaining valves and fire hydrants.
Outfall Maintenance: Clearing easements, repairing and inspecting manholes, and responding to sewer overflows.
- Performing semi-skilled and manual labor for water, wastewater, and general maintenance projects.
- Transporting materials, mowing, cleaning equipment, and minor repairs.
- Assisting with asphalt, concrete, storm sewer, and ditch projects.
- Supporting traffic control device installations.
- Assisting with excavations, pipeline work, valve and hydrant maintenance, leak detection, and utility shutdowns.
- Supporting neighborhood improvement, painting, carpentry, and general building maintenance.
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC).
- One year of maintenance field experience.
- Ability to lift 65 lbs regularly.
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
- OSHA Competent Person certification (not required at hire but must be obtained within one year).
- Experience in water & sewer maintenance at other municipalities (preferred).
- North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (preferred).
