Backend Software Engineer

Piper Companies is seeking a Staff Backend Software Engineer for a leading education technology platform in Raleigh-Durham, NC. The Staff Backend Software Engineer will design and maintain robust backend services, optimize APIs, and ensure system reliability and scalability. This is a hybrid position based in Raleigh-Durham, NC.

• Design, build, and maintain backend services in a Type Script/Node.js environment with strong test coverage
• Develop and optimize RESTful APIs to support mobile and web platforms
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering teams to deliver scalable solutions
• Monitor and maintain system health, including debugging production issues and optimizing Mongo
  
  DB performance
• Lead technical planning, define scope, and architect solutions balancing short-term needs with long-term scalability
• Champion engineering excellence through mentorship, code reviews, and evolving internal standards
• Participate in R&D efforts to evaluate new tools and technologies for future platform improvements

• 7+ years of backend development experience with strong Type Script expertise (critical)
• General understanding of Node.js stack and ability to debug complex issues
• Experience with Mongo

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Visual Studio (preferred)
• Cloud deployment experience (Render preferred)
• Ability to work autonomously, troubleshoot, and optimize platform performance
• Experience with Go or Rust and Python are not required but nice to have
• Must be eligible to work in the United States

• $165,000–$190,000 annually
