Lead Operations Supervisor – Go Durham

Position Summary – Operations Lead Supervisor

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Operations Lead Supervisor is responsible for the administrative work involved in planning, coordinating, and supervising the daily operations of the GoDurham public transit system. Responsibilities include training supervisors on the CAD/AVL system, developing route and schedule assignments for bus operations, coordinating dispatching activities, communicating with the Operations’ Department, assigning drivers, and ensuring accurate recording of transit ridership data, bus schedule adherence, employee performance, and vehicle maintenance.

The role ensures compliance with county, local, state, and federal regulations regarding transit operations, vehicle safety, driver certifications, and training.

Responsibilities
  • Engage with all Operations Supervisors to ensure that company goals and objectives are met on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
  • Serve as a backup to the Operations Scheduler and document operator time for payroll.
  • Assign, direct, and supervise transit, dispatching and related operations.
  • Manage Supervisor Callouts & Day‑to‑Day Schedules, informing AOM of all coverage and designing shifts.
  • Oversee daily work assignments for Operators using run board, extra board, and standby or call‑in Operators.
  • Monitor two‑way radio, directing or assisting Operators to ensure on‑time performance and respond to detours, accidents, incidents, etc.
  • Ensure Dispatch Logs, Hyperalerts, Incident Reports, and Bus Assignment Logs are stored and accessible.
  • Dispatch replacement buses and operators for vehicles involved in accidents or breakdowns, provide crowd control if needed, and complete reports.
  • Report all daily operational information to the Operations Manager.
  • Participate in accident and injury investigations, preparing material for hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
  • Formulate safety policies and procedures; ensure drivers meet all health and safety regulations, including CDL requirements.
  • Collaborate with Safety Officer, Safety Committee and Operators to maintain a strong safety culture, including safety displays and incentive programs.
  • Train, coach, mentor all Operations Supervisors and step into any Dispatch, Terminal, or Road Supervisor position when required.
  • Supervise operational discipline for Operators, conduct road evaluations, safety checks, schedule adherence evaluations, and fitness for duty checks.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to all internal and external clients of GoDurham.
  • Occasionally operate a vehicle in revenue service.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge: Thorough understanding of Durham area, GoDurham routes, service policies, employee roster, safety policies, FTA guidelines, and customer service policies. Understanding of transit operations and related regulations. Post‑secondary training in supervision/management, safety, training, human resources, or related fields is desired.
  • Experience: Four (4) years of direct transit operations experience. Prior experience in a supervisory or leadership position is a plus.
  • Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong organization and self‑directed work ethic. Proficiency with transportation CAD/AVL software, Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel. Ability to prepare and present clear, concise reports. Valid North Carolina CDL driver’s license.
  • Physical Demands/Work Environment: Ability to work required hours and days, vision, hearing, speech, manual dexterity. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general information concerning organizational needs and operations.
  • Mental Demands: Ability to listen, reason, think, concentrate, interact, and exercise self‑control under stressful conditions, especially in employee relations situations.
